Re: The New Joke Thread

A sailing math riddle:

You are not far from port! It won't take long to sail the last long hundred furlongs. So shake a reef, untie the knots and yee ship shall average six knots. How many hours will it take?

Hint, it takes longer than 2 hours. Why?

Well could be the wind is from right ahead so you have to tack to cover the last 12.5 miles. And there's a bar in front of the harbor so you have to wait on the tide. And you're in a shoal draft, long keel boat that makes a lot of leeway. And you have an old, blown out main that won't allow you to point very well. And the first mate is seasick and can't handle the sheets when you tack. And you lost the winch handle overboard and have to trim by hand.

I don't get it, but, I'm a little math challenged.
I get < 11 seconds.
1 furlong = 660 feet, so 100 furlongs = 6,600 feet.
1 nautical mile = 6,076 (6,080) feet, so 6 knots = 36,456 feet/hour.
6,600 ÷ 36,454 = 0.18 hours
0.18 x 60 min/hr = 10.86 minutes.

Looking forward to the answer.

OOPS. Told you I was challenged.
66,000 ÷ 36,454 = 1.8 hours, or 1 Hr, 48 Min., or < 2 Hrs.
Still waiting, for what I'm sure, will be an interesting answer.

Correct....

We all know about long tons and there is even a long thousand in addition to a long hundred.

Bonus points time

About how big is hundred hundreds?

And the answer is not 10,000. The fact is there isn't an exact number.

Hint: British sailors are more likely to figure this one out.

Re: The New Joke Thread

Maybe CF should have a Puzzle Thread, in addition to the Joke Thread.

Good one, forgot about the long v. short when it comes to measures.

So how many cups per minute would that entail.?

I can recall traveling to my aluminum products company's factory in the UK and having to convert their metric weights and distances and currency valuations to dollar per pound. So metric tonnage at Pound Sterling, to USA pounds / short tons in USA dollars so as to assess if their financial books seemed reasonable. Mind twizzling.

And of course they use a period wherein we Yanks use commas.

In British English, a billion used to be equivalent to a million million (i.e. 1,000,000,000,000), while in American English it has always equated to a thousand million (i.e. 1,000,000,000). ... In British English, a trillion used to mean a million million million (i.e. 1,000,000,000,000,000,000). Ah, but what are three zeros, nothing right?

Statisticians have calculated that the amount of money we in the west spend on food in one week would feed all the hungry in the world for one year.

Don't know about you, but I can't help but think that we're being overcharged for our groceries.

Is the tendency to run into trees a medical emergency that justifies travel to get a haircut?

Re: The New Joke Thread

For all you math guys, try this mathematical film equation. It's pretty amazing. Mine turned out to be "Raiders of the Lost Ark". I was surprised how this worked.

This equation will predict which of the 18 films listed below is your favorite. Don't ask me how, but it really works!

Don't cheat and look at the film list till you have done the maths!

Here goes...

Film Test:

Pick a number from 1-9.

Multiply by 3.

Add 3.

Multiply by 3 again.

Now add the two digits together to find your predicted favorite film in the list of 18 films below.

Film List:

1. Gone With The Wind
2. E.T.
3. Beverly Hills Cop
4. Star Wars
5. Forrest Gump
6. The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
7. Jaws
8. Grease
9. The Joy of Gay Anal Fisting
10. Casablanca
11. Jurassic Park
12. Shrek
13. Pirates of the Caribbean
14. Titanic
15. Raiders Of The Lost Ark
16. Home Alone
17. Mrs. Doubt-fire
18. Toy Story”
