Fin Keel Vessel: Antarctica to Victoria, Australia

Hi, everyone,

Just saw this story: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-05-...-bay/100108488

As the article continues along, you will see a hull shape not unfamiliar to many of us.....picture taken before it got all covered in biofouling.

You expected a classic, full keel drone, like in the good old days?

I wanna know who has 'right of way' and how to tell if it sail or prop powered when underway...

Yes, yet another fin keeled, spade ruddered light weight yacht rounding Cape Stiff in the winter, and skippered by a single hander minus one at that!

Slocum was aided by the ghost of the pilot of the Pinta (I think it was). I reckon this boat was aided by the ghost of Slocum.

Great achievement in many ways...

No-one has right of way under the ColRegs. You are either ‘Stand-on’ or ‘Give way’. I don’t think it’s been completely settled yet, some seem to think that autonomous vessels should be treated as RAM (Restricted in Ability to Manoeuvre) and therefore all other vessels would be ‘give way’.
Others say that the Artificial Intelligence software can be made to completely comply with ColRegs. I guess time will tell.

I sort of understand why autonomous vessels could be considered RAM, however (to draw a long bow), does that mean that any yacht could be considered RAM if the autopilot or wind vane is steering?

Same sort of argument maybe?

(And to be clear, I know that a vessel with autopilot or wind vane steering is NOT considered RAM).

I think the idea of considering them as RAM is as a convenience.
But the huge difference is that we have humans on watch even when we’re on autopilot able to direct the manoeuvring by whatever means; button pushing, line pulling, or disengaging the auto. There is no restriction on manoeuvring.

As for the AI following the ColRegs, I’d like to know how it would recognise a yacht that was motor-sailing.

Phhhht...
Heythrop's #4 lifeboat was abandoned offshore from East London in November 1971.... Turned up in Albany WA in February 1973.
They reckon it had done a circumnav and a bit.
Feel free to do your own research.
We don't need no steenkin fin keels..

Which Heythrop would that be?
HMS “Heythrop”* (L 85) was Sunk on 20 Mar 1942, by U-652.

* Slightly different name.

Oops! The P&O tanker “Heythrop”

Do you have a reference, for the Lifeboat #4 story?
