The version I learned many years ago in nuclear power training:
If you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, you will get it wrong 90% of the time.

The subtle difference in wording changes the meaning significantly. Getting it wrong goes from a probability to a certainty.

This is a true story.

Last night while sitting on the couch feeling fat and bloated from holiday over eating, I decided to join a fitness club whose motto is, "The Judgement free zone!"

I drove over there and a young lady greeted me and asked if I'd like a tour. As we walked around, she asked me what my fitness goals were. I said, "I'd like to lose some weight and get in better shape."

Then I snorted and said, "Yeah, good luck with that..."

But she laughed WAAY too hard at that one...

I think I'm going to start out on the hydrotherapy bed, or the massage chair...

Now that has me remember the ninety-ninety rule of software estimation:

• It takes 90% of your available time to get the first half of the job done, and
• it takes the other 90% of your available time to get the second half of the job done.
