Looks like it’s sat unloved in the hot Florida sun for a few years and there’s going to be a lot of rot to deal with. A great buy for someone who likes a project IF it can be had for $30k or so. Above that, it’s a big gamble.

These boats are huge, iirc. A lifetime project*, if you needed one!

If not too far gone, these are nice boats.
Worth a look if you're in the region.

Nonsuch 26 in Halifax, NS.
$38K CAD is just a few dollars over $30K US.
These boats are really great small cruisers. Huge interiors for the length. Single sail, wishbone boom. Shallow draft. Very popular gunkholing cruiser.
Practically new engine.
We know someone who comfortably single-hands one of these and lived aboard for 3 seasons in Canada then cruised the Bahamas in the winter.

Interesting boat with some innovative thinking. Pretty lightly built. 1/4” marine ply IIRC, and I am pretty sure I do. Twin diesels running hydraulic motors. Either engine could run either or both props or be independent.
KETCH RIG.
She should have been constructed under Choy’s supervision.
We passed. Then she showed up on the Sailing Texas site some years later. The a bit ago someone was posting about her, not her owner but someone who was helping the owner. Sounds like they got her back to the States and now want out.

Thanks for the info! Very interesting. She’s a big boat and that means big refit bills... sounds like the current owners want out and it could be a good deal for someone!

A neglected plywood boat in Florida. That would make me extremely nervous. $25K might be asking too much.

I have to ask, why did you end up passing on it? Depending on the price, it was probably in a lot better shape back then.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds
I really wish that I was in Florida right now instead of in the middle of the Arizona desert. I'd love to drive around and look at some of these boats. I've passed on a few of them because I have too many doubts and they're too far away to go and 'tire kick'.

Even then it was relatively low priced, $140k?????
We were new to the idea of a live aboard and were struggling with defining our “use case”. So we looked at a very wide variety of boats. Made an offer on one a day late. Went to closing on another to reject it based on survey findings.
Arkanoa was just not the right boat for us.
We ended up buying a 44’ heavy steel cutter which has worked out well for us. For one thing have been froze in and around some ice in our cruising. And may yet have more of that.
For us she is an old affair that was just not meant to be. We hold some affection for her, but not a good fit.

A 1980 Union Polaris 36 for just under $30K
This California vessel seems to be a well cared for example of these classic cruisers with the gear to make her pretty much ready to go.
Key will be the condition and integrity of her teak deck.
Recent upgrades include:
Chainplates replaced Nov 2018
Thru hulls (5) replaced Nov 2018
New Bottom paint Nov 2018
New Holding tank gauge installed December 2018

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds
I'd love to do the same , just drive around Florida ,visiting some of those boats , it will be a couple of years down the line before I do that
Has covid caused a jump in boat prices in the USA ?
