- What’s my sailing background?
As a kid my father, who used to race sharpies in Germany when he was young, owned a Buccaneer on the Vaal Dam in partnership with a Norwegian which we sailed and raced actively.
My father also bought a tired looking wooden Cygnet dinghy sailor which I sanded and restored to an all varnish beauty on which I spent many hours sailing and dreaming of bigger things.
While at university in Cape Town I was active as crew on a racing 33’ Petersen based at RCYC and became notorious for causing an embarrassing loss of the season cup when I lost the spinnaker over the side as we were leading the final race of the season one year.
Years later a Baltic 42 that I looked after as a live aboard in St Maarten for her owner came into my life and I dreamt the same dreams of “real” voyaging as I sailed her between islands (with permission) but it did not come to pass.
In 2000 I bought my first boat a Jeanneau Eolia which we kept on the Vaal dam (a large inland dam in South Africa) until I sold her to help with the purchase of Thaba Manzi Ranch and fulfilment of my ranching dream.
I currently have a 25ft Rebell Seaskip II also at the Vaal Dam.
So not much in terms of what trans ocean sailors call “real sailing”.
That said I have now also purchased a 32ft Samson C-Mist, a very well built ferro boat that I am converting to a Junk Rig sloop.
