Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

Thanks for your clear reply, but what is the reason for that ? Just no plans or techically complicated with Android or what ? I use radar with Linux version and monitor s
screen on android tablet in cockpit, but would like to have direct radar picture on tablet.

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

AEM..
The radar scanner needs a wired IP connection to the PC or MFD. A normal wifi don't have the required bandwidth for the scanner types supported. A Android don't have a network card to connect the wire.
That would be a technical reason.
So I use it as you mentioned. The scanner connected to the PC and a VNC connected tablet at the cockpit.

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

I suppose it is possible to use the "LAVA nSTS-E Ethernet Adapter" or similar ethernet data adapter to connect wired scanner to Android laptop. As no available the Radar plugin for Android, I would test the Linux emulation on tablet with standard OpenCPN and plugin. What is your opinion ?

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

I think Hakan's suggestion to use VNC to connect your Linux device to your tablet would be easier as it's a wireless connection.

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

I just can't get a grip on what network protocols are used on the radar.

Usually it isn't a big deal to wire up a LAN connection to a WiFi router and bridge the WLAN / LAN like a repeater / network extender. Then you can in theory use all network protocols, at least the TCP/IP based. The chartplotter issues 10.x.x.x IP addresses by dhcp, afaik.

The speed of the LAN interface on Raymarine is 100Mbps, this is doable with the newer WiFi standards n/ac in the 5Ghz frequencies, eben b/g in 2.4Ghz would probably work.

CatNewBee...

For wifi it's not only the speed but size of the packages. See the discussion about Navico's scanner here:

There are notes about Raymarine in the manual as well.

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

Can I connect the Radar to an ethernet port and then find and use it on my tablet?

I have a Garmin 18 xhd+, OpenCPN on a windows tablet, and a tp-link router for my boat's network.

I have the pin 5 switch in place and the router recognizes it but I can't get the radarpi plugin on OpenCPN to recognize the radar.....

Thanks in advance, been pulling my hair out through this process....

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

I have set up a test case at home using Navionics Halo20 radar which is conected to the switch part of a Zyxel P8072N router. I can then display the radar in OpenCPN using a PC that connects to the router with WIFI. The router/switch can use both 2.4 and 4 GHz for WIFI. The setup was painless as everything worked at once.
I was amazed that this worked without any problems.

Thanks a lot for the work on the radar plugin

I should say my question is can I plug the radar into an Ethernet port on my router and then use it on my tablet?
Right not the switch is wired and working and my router shows that the Garmin radar is on but OpenCPN is giving me "no interface found interface must match 172.16/12"

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

sailingadrift..
I suggest you first connect the radar scanner cable direct to PC Ethernet port to avoid any switch network issues.
I assume me you have set the fixed IP address of the PC as of the manual?

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

DrottII..
Yes the wifi connection to a radar scanner is physically working. Nothing new.

The problem with a normal wifi router's use to be they are not able to handle the big data packages sent from the scanner unless the router is not patched to handle that. The result use to be it's so to say working but all target blobs are not transferred to the screen.
So please check all radar data are transferred.

I've attempted to do that thru my router but my router settings do not allow IP addresses assigned outside of the 192.168.0.100 - 192.168.0.199 range. Is there a setting I need to change on the router? Or any other work around?

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

With direct I mean the scanner wired to the PC and not the router.
Please read the manual here:https://opencpn-manuals.github.io/ma...e_installation
If you for any reason want to share the scanner it's easier to use a switch. If you use a router it has to be set to the same IP segment as the radar scanner's fixed address. A Garmin scanner don't use DHCP.

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

I had to order a second wired adapter for my tablet because it doesnt come with an Ethernet port. I will post results once that arrives and I can test this out.

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

Thanks for the info. That was useful. I will check thoroughly when the radar is installed onboard.
