The point is that I was told (and you will be told) "you can't get much for under $20K". You definitely have to be careful but solid old boats are out there. And you must count on spending more to keep it in shape.

Hi.
This thread is about giving hope and ideas or suggestions of recent or current noteworthy finds of boats within the $30K budget.
Obviously "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." So, I encourage everyone to post photos of the boats they are finding or recommending, so that everyone else can see what that type or particular boat looks like.
Since you have mentioned your boat, and now have it, and because it was just recently purchased at a price within this thread's topic (<$30K), go ahead and post a few photos of it here, showing the condition of the boat interior, deck, cockpit, etc.
______________
To Everyone: Let's try to keep this thread focused on boats that are AVAILABLE on the market today.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds
I just received a notice about this new listing that fit my search parameters for boats to mention in this thread.
Oday 35 1984
Asking Price : $30K
Location: Westport, CT
Link: 1985 Oday 35 Sail Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com
Quoted from the Sale Listing:
Specs
Keel: Fin
Dimensions
Beam: 11 ft 3 in
LWL: 28 ft 9 in
Minimum Draft: 5 ft 7 in
Displacement: 11300 lbs
Ballast: 4600 lbs
Sails and Canvas
New Mainsail 2012 from UK with Dutchman
New 150% Genoa 2104 made by Hathaway Sails
New Genoa furler 2015 by Harken model USP1
Boom vang and traveler
New custom Dodger in 2012 by Liberty Canvas
Full cockpit awning with side panels
Pedestal cover and Mainsail cover
Running rigging replaced recently
Three group 27 batteries, all new in 2014
Tanks
Fresh Water Tanks: (50 Gallons)
Fuel Tanks: (30 Gallons)
Holding Tanks: (15 Gallons)
My Observations:
This boat looks very clean, and the broker says in the sale ad that it is in exceptional condition (looks 10 years old). Looking at the description in the sale notice, it appears the boat has been prepped for sale. New running rigging, relatively new sails (main in 2012, genoa in 2014) and a new furler (2015), relatively new dodger (2012), new batteries (2014), new cushions.
Two features I like are the swim steps on the transom (shown in the sale listing) and the two large Dorade vents on deck.
Many boats at this price point do NOT have ALL that going for them. So, apparently someone has made an effort to make this boat presentable. That is a good sign. It is certainly much better looking than many or most of the boats I have seen listed for $30K at this approximate size.
In short this looks nice for a typical coastal cruiser.
Shortcomings? The tanks look a little small for my purpose (extended long distance blue water cruising), but there are work-arounds for that and it may not be important to most sailors who are only going on shorter trips or coastal cruises between watering holes.

Is is still for sale?
The linked post looks like it is in "archive" mode and not in the regular classifieds for sale boats, and I found no way to post this comment in that listing.
I am not in the market for that type of boat myself, but it does look like a very nice condition one of that type.

Yessir Mr. Steady!
She still is available... I've been lazy and reluctant to list with the major boat sales websites... Mostly just let it be known here in case there's a good CF'r who wants to stumble into a good boat deal...
I'm living 1,916 miles away from her and have used her twice in the past year.... Last time was a couple months ago, filled the water tank, topped off the batteries, and went to the islands for the weekend... One of the fastest transits ever... and she's been there hundreds of times... The pics are more than a year old, and she could use some buffing and cleanup now...
I'll relist her in the regular classifieds for ya to post the link here!
Anybody can PM me for current info/pics/phone #

It looks like a lovely boat. I started cruising on a buddy's 1984 ODay 39 and it was a great boat to live on. However, when we got caught in any kind of weather, the oil-canning never really made me feel great! Maybe it was the particular boat we were on..I never investigated the stringers to see if something was amiss for instance. But when it came time to buy my own boat it made me want to go "conservative"!

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds
I came across a boat today that fits this thread.
Reason she caught my eye? She looks pretty while sailing. I like seeing a ketch under sail. Clipper bow. Wood accents. Nice looking paint job shown in the photos.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds
Here is a boat I found on a popular auction site. I am posting this to show the type of boat and the possible cost and condition.
I picked this boat because the Pearson Vanguard is a common and popular boat, that now because of its age is found at lower prices on the market.
Note that this is a full keel boat. This particular boat appears to be in very nice condition. It is being auctioned by BoatAngel (for charity).
This listing has a link to a 2015 survey that can be seen, and many photos showing the recent (September 2015) condition of the boat.
Pearson Vanguard 32'6" 1964
Full Keel
Year: 1964
Make: Pearson
Model: Vanguard
Length: 32'6”
Beam: 8'9”
Draft: 6'
Engine: Atomic 4 (Gasoline)
Location = Illinois, USA
Auction = SOLD for $3,809

Posting a photo here or information about a boat does NOT constitute an endorsement of that boat or that brand or that seller of the boat. The buyer should still "beware."
The buyer should always ask: In what condition is it?
As with any purchase of any large boat, it is wise to have the boat surveyed by a professional Yacht Surveyor prior to purchase. If you are a newbie and don't have much experience with sailboats, this is especially important.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds
Here is a Marieholm 26 that really did catch my eye.
Somehow I've developed a weakness for swedish Folkboats: they're simple, elegant, solid, and well suited for rough seas like the Biscay Bay. This one is really attractively priced at 4.500€ (about $5,000), and comes with a good suite of equipment.
First problem: it's located in Scotland, 900 miles away from where I live. That could be about two weeks' coast hopping at 60 miles per day - no problem, that could be a nice holiday cruise, but my experience is mostly in inland waters, and open seas are another story. However, there are many folks who buy used boats in France or the Netherlands and sail them to Spain, as prices are much better. Anyway, I'm not sure this is a realistic plan.
Also, it's even suspiciously cheap IMO. Some things I've noticed from the description that could explain it:
· It has only a 4hp outboard.
· Sails are rather old (ca. 2000), though in the photos they look good
· Paint is worn out in the upper edge of the hull. If it's only that it wouldn't matter much to me. I'd be glad if she doesn't have any major structural faults.
Any thoughts on this baby?

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds
I like Folk Boats too. I admire the class of boats, like the lines/design, and often think they look nice on the water.
I raced on one in San Francisco a long time ago. It was wood. It had a very spartan interior.
I have never owned one. Best to get some comment from Folk boat owners and especially those who may use one for cruising. I don't want to discourage you, and I don't want you or others to think I don't like those boats. Here are my opinions of Folk Boats:
1. Classic design. Seaworthy.
2. The cockpit is deep, so different feeling from more modern boats. It seems like one is sitting down in a tub.
3. The cabin has limited headroom. I am 6' and 200# (fit, but not a small guy) so the interior space seemed "small" to me. I don't have measurements for the headroom in the cabin, but as I recall I had to crouch (bend down) to avoid hitting my head.
4. The boat I was on did not have lifelines. This makes for a risky situation if you have to go forward to tend to the foresail in rough water/seas. See the photo I am attaching that shows a similar boat with a crewman standing on the side deck.
Would I want one?
Sure (because I like most boats). Some are very pretty boats (see the attached blue boat). But I would probably only use it for day sailing, bay or lake sailing, near shore coastal sailing, and probably not expect to cruise for any long periods on it. For me, it just did not seem "comfortable" as a cruising boat. But, this is because I have been on more modern (wider taller) boats that have more headroom and better interiors for cruising.
That said, if one has to pick a smaller boat (24 - 28 feet) that is known to be "seaworthy" the Folk boat is often recommended as a good possibility. In other words, it does have a very long standing good reputation.
Would I want to sail it from Scotland to Spain?
I have not sailed over those waters (that course). Would I try? Yes, with proper planning and careful attention to the weather etc. Two good CF members to ask would be Boatman61 (he sailed a similar sized boat and lives in Portugal) or Barnakiel (also has sailed circumnavigation with a similar sized boat and is familiar with that coast).
I will post a few photos from my files to show you interior and cockpit etc.

Thanks for your reply and advice!
I see there are many folk boat variants, from the first classic nordic ones to the IF (International Folkboat) class, which seems to be a newer development in GRP, while keeping the original style. The one I linked is one of the later, and it looks roomier than the ones in your photos (but that might be just an impression). Also, it seems to have lifelines attached. Anyway, I would rarely spend more than a weekend aboard, so comfort is not a priority right now. I think I'll keep it in my short list, despite its limitations.
----
BTW, I searched the forums for marieholm and found this one also for sale, exactly the same model, but with a much higher standard (and price!):
