Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds
I continue to read new threads here on CF that were started by new members who are looking for good "first boats" on which to do some coastal cruising. Many hope to find an affordable (budget less than $30K) boat for cruising as a couple with occasional guests. Many want to find a boat suitable for cruising around Florida, with a possible trip to the Bahamas. Because of this desire, I have been keeping my eyes open for boats I would consider strongly if I were in their boat shoes.
Here is another example of a boat that is 30 feet long, appears to be in very good condition for its age, and is less than $20K. Note that it has draft of only 4 feet, something that many would find appealing for Bahamas, Keys, ICW, or Chesapeake boating where a boat with less than 6' draft could be helpful.
Ericson 30
1983
Asking Price = $18,000
Location = New York
Steady's Observations:
I was frankly surprised to see the interior looking as nice as it does on a boat this length. The boat is only 30' long (29.5') and yet appears very similar to larger/longer boats (typically 35'-37'). The use of wood looks nicely done too. In short, given the updated equipment, newer engine and newer sails, along with the apparent (in photos) condition, I think this looks like a nice boat. I have not sailed on this model of boat before, so, as always, I encourage any CF members who do have experience with this type of boat to add their comments in the thread.
1. Draft = 4'
2. Numerous significant recent updated equipment listed in sale listing.
3. photo also shows interior in good condition
4. photo shows canvas dodger and bimini
1983 Ericson 30 sailboat for sale in New York

Upgrades: new marine 60amp battery charger (2013), Adler-Barbour refrigeration (previous owner but in new condition), 5 battery house bank (5 dc 27s in custom box), mast and boom repainted (2011), spare mast and spare boom, new Mainsail Doyle (2013), new 135 dacron genoa Doyle (2011), Like new racing 153 (rarely used), auto pilot (2011), partially rewired with new blue sea electrical panel (2013), New 110amp alternator (2013), Harken main sheet track (2013), many more upgrades. Lovingly cared for and improved since purchase. Needs nothing sail away condition. $25000. PRICE REDUCED now $18000!" _____________________
Caveat Emptor! Buyer Beware!
I have NO connection to the seller or owner of this boat. Posting a photo here or information about a boat does NOT constitute an endorsement of that boat or that brand or that seller of the boat. The buyer should still "beware."
The buyer should always ask: In what condition is it?
As with any purchase of any large boat, it is wise to have the boat surveyed by a professional Yacht Surveyor prior to purchase. If you are a newbie and don't have much experience with sailboats, this is especially important.

Wow that is great value, not familiar with that design out here in Oz but if they sail well would be a great buy

It is 33 feet long and not small in size/weight. It would cost probably about $10K to $15K to transport it to you in Kentucky/Tennessee. That would include the cost to prepare the boat for over the road trucking, moving it (called transport) costs, etc.

So with a SA/Disp. of 14.7 and a Disp./ Length ratio of 330.45 is this boat a pig? Would it take 15 kts. of wind to get it to move?
Thanks for all the info you put out btw.

It is a cruiser.
I have not sailed on one.
You could ask the current owner or others.
But this is not a race boat, ultralight, or a light day sailer.
The following are generalizations.
In 10 knots of wind or less, many cruising type boats will move, but slowly or sluggishly, if they are heavy, full of thousands of pounds of gear and people and have dirty bottoms and old sails and/or inexperienced sailors doing poor sail trim or steering.
In general, for a boat the size and type you are considering, you might expect the fastest you can go to be about 6 or 7 knots, what is close to what is called "hull speed" in the best of conditions, with about 15-20 knots of wind.. In less favorable, for reasons I mentioned earlier, the speed will be less.
In short, most monohull sailboats up to 50 feet, do not go very fast, if they are not surfing down a big wave. Sailing is about relative speed. So a boat that does go faster than 6 knots will seem fast, even if it is only going 8 knots while another is going 5. Then a trimaran will blow past going 15 knots, making the fast mono seem like a slug. Remember it is relative.

Thanks! I really hope it helps folks see some good possibilities.
I think your boat should be in this thread too, with multiple photos, because it looks like an outstanding deal on a boat that appears very nice in condition. Your boats salon looks nice and clean and liveable. . I would do that, add it here, if that is permissible.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds
Hullmaster 31 - Douglas 32 (similar molds, different manufactures)
I have owned both, and sailed the hullmaster to the Bahamas and back to Toronto. Good sturdy boats from Canada (1973-80), with encapsulated ballast, good motion, and many have crossed the Atlantic and Pacific. My Douglas has been as far as Tasmania.
There are 4 on the yacht world site right now:
Current Price:Can$ 15,000 (US$ 11,253) Cornwall, Ontario Canada

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds
This is a very good cruiser just posted in Boats for sale....looks good, sails well, roomy, lots of extras. There have been some positive comments and some inquiries already.
Hunter Cherubini Cutter 37' ($14,900) Deltaville, VA
37' Cherubini Hunter cutter rig sailboat, 1980, (Deltaville, VA on Jackson Creek at FBYC)
LOA 37'-6", LWL 32'0", width 11'-0", draft 5'-1", displacement 18,600 lbs, ballast 7500 lbs.
GPS, Chart plotter, Depth/fish finder, autopilot, A/C, refrigeration, inverter.
3QM Yanmar diesel, Campbell Sailor propeller,
Dodger, Bimini, hard bottom inflatable dinghy with Nissan 2.5 outboard. Anchor Windlass, bowsprit with bow seat, folding table in cockpit.
Stereo with cassette and CD, VHF.
Sturdy, roomy, 6'2" headroom inside, fitted BottomSiders cockpit cushions.
Double sink, tile countertop, refrigeration. 40 gallon fuel tank, 2-50 gallon water tanks and Lifesling.
New mixing elbow, throttle cable, charger, battery, impellers, water pump, main power cable, bimini.
Sturdy reef-able main sail and cutter/stay sail, roller furling Yankee jib, asymmetrical spinnaker with Chute Scoop. Coast Guard equipment, PHRF rating 189.
This boat has been maintained but shows some age and would benefit from a bit of TLC. The sale price has been lowered to reflect condition and is firm.
