And still I very much like Nautilus as it is in Jules Verne novel as well the story itself ..
Baloney. I think if YOU like it and it is personally meaningful, then it is the right name. Besides the Nautilus was a highly advanced and heroic ship, not unlucky, IMO.

You gotta pick a name that is easily said, easily understood, and easy to spell...a single name is best....forget about the "Betsy Sue" stuff...and other multi word names....
Best boat name I had on one of mine was'Double B'

Re: Sailboat names

My boat and my dog came with names that I didn't change.

Is there a song in that?

Re: Sailboat names

Hm... Nautilus is not very imaginative let alone unique in my opinion. But so what?

Since you are talking about an Albin you might think about a name that is common in Scandinavian waters: Örnen (Eagle), or even as rendered in English, particularly in Scottish English: Ern.

Simple, easy to remember, not easily mis-heard or understood on the radio.

How about "Minstrel" for the Ballad, and "Harp" for the dinghy? Or, if you're big on puns, Minstrelsy or Minstrel C.

Clearly I like the sound of the name.

Re: Sailboat names

Lazy1,

I, like you, also received my dog and cat with predetermined names from their previous owners. I also kept them both.

Dexter

Adastracat
(I suppose this name doesn’t meet MicHughV’s strict guidelines/criteria for vessel names)

In case you can’t determine which is the cat and which is the dog, the pictures should answer that question.

Safe Journeys,
~Jake

Nautilus is a marine mollusk of great beauty and a very complex life.......great name for a boat in my opinion.

Re: Sailboat names

I've had pets....with a variety of names....but animals don't understand English or care what you call them...I think they relate to the "sound" of a name...my dog relates to the "sound of the fridge opening".....I can call her by name and she (yes, it's a "she") will ignore you, but opening the fridge, she can hear from 1/2 mile away.

I don't think boats care what you name them either...but seeing as boats are generally referred to in the female gender...calling your boat " Bob" might lead to some emotional trauma...

Boat naming is customarily done with a lot of people in attendance and great nautical fanfare, so there is that aspect to it.

Re-naming a boat also requires a lot of nautical mumbo jumbo to remove the " spirit' of the previous name....

I have a friend that named his boat after a previous girlfriend, then got married to a new girl.....talk about drama, fire and brimstone.....

All in all, it's a difficult process to select a name and proceed to anoint your boat with it...I've seen a boat using the the first few letters on a keyboard " Qwerty"...could not say why this was chosen as a name....

Or, you could be like Elon Musk and use " X Æ A-Xii"....no, perhaps not....

nah, stick with "Nautilus"....

One last thought:

You could go with cool Nemo-related names

Mysterious (after the island)

Aronnax (after the professor)

Prince Dakkar (Nemo's real name)

And of course

Nemo Me or Nemome (I am no one.)

Very mysterious

I think it is best when the name of the boat has a personal meaning than named about someone else's dream.

I agree.

Our boat is named "Firth of Tay" as my wife's mother was born in Scotland in a small village a stone's show from that estuary. She, the mother, didn't leave Scotland until she was in her early 20's, so many pictures and stories involved the estuary. My wife has visited there many times and once with me. The firth is in many of our pictures from the visits.

Re: Sailboat names

I’ve seen “crystal blue persuasion” with crystal on the transom and blue persuasion up the starboard side. That was long.

“It wasn’t me” on a race boat.

Unlike many names, boat names are about the subtext first, then the actual text.

https://cgmix.uscg.mil/psix/psixsearch.aspx

Says there are many many boats and ships named Nautilus. Around the globe.
