Boat Yards Sympathetic??.

Hi, has anybody found any of the Marinas or Boat Yards ""Sympathetic"" to Boat Owners having to leave their Boat ashore during Covid year..
I am arguing with boat yard. I had a 6 month contract, relatively expensive. I couldn't travel to move boat, now they'll have me!!!!!!.
I do realise that it's business but yard was not full needing space etc..
Did boaters have same problem everywhere!!.

As the owner of a boat yard once said to me... "Don't ever feel sorry for anyone who owns a boat".

It doesn't hurt to ask, but as you stated, it IS a business.

They also want to collect a debt as simply, and with as little fuss as possible.

Everything is negotiable is you have payment in hand.

Remember their leverage is a lien on your boat, Your leverage is an offer for immediate payment.

Good will, and negotiating on good faith goes a long way.

I have sometimes gotten a price break for events beyond my control. Most recently with a shipyard in Florida, where I put my boat pre hurricane, and was unable to launch on schedule because of a hurricane.

The shipyard manager after a polite conversation agreed to not charge for the extra week, and adjusted my bill to the original dates if I was able to tender in full at the end of conversation.

Re: Boat Yards Sympathetic??.

I did not launch my boat for the 2020 season for a couple of reasons, including the boatyard prohibition on any owners working on their boats and eliminating parking except for people renting dock space. I still had to pay for summer storage.

Re: Boat Yards Sympathetic??.

I've heard of boatyards granting exceptions and extending winter storage (land storage) contracts through summer months. However, that was for 2020. I've not heard of any doing so in 2021.

It's tough to negotiate after the fact. If the marina/boatyard has a policy, as most do, that during the high season you get charged a day rate, or a higher rate, to be in the yard, then the discussion should have occurred at the beginning of the season rather than the end.

What are the details of this?

When was your yard contract over?

What is their policy for yard storage during the summer?

Good God, man, they're a business not your parents. Pay the bill so they don't compensate by raising rates on others.

I wonder how many boat owners have been "sympathetic" to Boat Yard's plight during COVID by offering to pay more to offset their loss of business?

I guess we now know why the marina heads are so often out of toilet paper.
