Re: Orcas have destroyed our rudder

As last resort, maybe we should consult with Japan, Norway, Iceland, ..Russia. If it gets out of hand I am pretty sure they are experienced in how to deal with naughty whales.

Perhaps the CIA should have asked the Kurdish people about WMDs. It's reported that the Kurds, actually had first hand information.

Orcas official statement

It was all just a silly misunderstanding about attacking your rudders.

We were just trying to help you along with your journey as we regularly do with penguins!

Why would the Cetacean Intelligence Agency talk to the Kurds about Whales of Mass Destruction.
Have they been spotted in the Tigris and Euphrates.???

Not sure if this was your intent but this is racist and classless.

Excuse me Boatman61, I said I'd do it to protect my home and boat, not that I wanted to. And of course it would surly be a mistake and wrong and I'd regret it. But rage at feeling helpless can lead to bad decisions.

Regrettable Yes! But why would it be wrong?

Every lifeform has that automatic defense mechanism to defend itself.

We still don't understand the reason for the Orca attacks, but it is a real danger from an intelligent and capable animal

Yes, we have the ability to modify our response to align with the level of threat, which is why the first deterrent tried should be acoustic...... ....
.....but I would also consider a 5000kg Orca ramming my small spade rudder offshore an immediate threat, justifying a lethal response if the deterrent failed.

Using guns is a LAST resort when we go ashore in Alaska's remote wilderness, and locals see it as a bit stupid not to carry one .

If I were transiting this pod attack area I would have at least a seal bomb on board in case of an attack.
If these attacks became more common in other areas, I would have a lethal solution as a LAST resort.

And you believe that you can carry a gun without beeing put in jail anywhere in the world except Alaska and maybe Northern Canada the Philippines and a few US States. Remember: you are not allowed to own even a paintball "gun" in California. Owning a gun in Malaysia is death sentence.

No, modern mankind is not allowed to protect itself. Not against marauding intruders and of course not against orcas.

Re: Orcas have destroyed our rudder

I don't consider California the best managed place in the world

My experience is that with the proper application, hunting licenses, training and storage, most places will let you transit their waters with declared weapons either held ashore in bond till your departure or sealed on board, with anticipated added inspections enroute.

I agree, unless you are going into bear country, not really worth all that red tape.

Say what? I'm not a gun person, but the ~350 million privately owned firearms that are reported in teh USA seem to cast doubts upon your statement. We have encountered quite a few folks out cruising with firearms on board. Not what I want, but there are plenty who do and who carry out the idea on board. Each country has its own rules about what happens to the firearm when entering the country, but death sentences are scarcely a threat in cruising destinations.

I would not be keen to shoot an Orca, and I'm not sure that a simple "deer rifle" type weapon would have much effect upon such a large and blubbery creature, but I believe that it is legally an option if threatened.

But I think avoiding the confrontation is the best idea by far!

Best way to keep em away from your rudder..!!!
Tow your inflatable 20yards behind the boat while passing their area...
Just watched a short clip on the news about a yacht passing Nazare.. the young Orca came along and poked the dinghy a couple of times then butted it from below a couple of times before swimming off..
Looks like the pod may be moving back North for the winter in Biscay.

Re: Orcas have destroyed our rudder

That's interesting Boatie, they are focusing on whatever is at the Stern.
Something has set this pod off to be territorial...and I suspect it is because of a bad interaction with offshore fishing retrieval

It is not illegal to own a gun or a paintball gun in California.
