It is naïve to believe that mankind cannot and should not control animal nature. It has always done so, and with mainly positive results. We have produced thousands of animal species, tailored to our needs and whims, from beef and dairy cattle to sheep and goats, from dogs that sniff out human cadavers to Pommericans? and Poodles. My family has bred hunting Beagles for four generations. The dogs are trained to drive rabbits under the guns of the hunter. Not only do the dogs help provide game meat and entrainment but also financial profit when a trained dog is sold.

I also agree it’s completely naive to think can’t and doesn’t control nature. Not only is 99% of the animals we eat domesticated bred for our liking, but 99% of the fruit and vegetables. None of the plants we eat today represent anything that is found in nature before our ancestors selectively bred it.

(And it’s just stupid to let all the crocs run rampart in Australia.)

Those Orcas will be culled soon.

Really? And for what purpose? To protect the spade rudders of the Iberian peninsula? That does not seem to me a worthy cause to justify any culling of anything. I guess we could solve the problem by just killing all Orcas off the coast of Gibraltar. But we should probably kill all of them from England to the Canaries and on through the Med, because they may also take up the practice.

I don't understand why some people's first reaction is to kill the Orcas. Killing something because you don't understand their behavior is not the solution.

Re: Orcas have destroyed our rudder

It is silly to talk in excess terms.

The aberrant aggressive behavior of a single pod should not be seen in terms of rudders but the potential of human loss if happened in a storm or the boat sunk.

Acoustic deterrents is the first test and if they were to become more aggressive (doubtfull) then culling of this pod for scientific study is an unfortunate but reasonable next step

Who knows, Test may indicate chemical abnormalities due to toxic pollution.

Look at the big picture when humans and a species are threatened

Big picture?
7,000,000,000 people and how many orcas?
And we are the threatened species?

Not getting it

Of course we can breed, but we also extinct a lot of species and every one has its place in nature (and the "food chain", if that's closer to home).

Estimates are about 50,000.

What if they all learned to attack small boats and there was nice chewy stuff inside if you didn't peel them

Re: Orcas have destroyed our rudder

So, how do you decide which Orcas to cull. Do you look for bottom paint on their noses?
OH Stop the presses. Hooray!

My manatee crew has the answer!

You tell them to open their jaws and you look for fiberglass between those nice BIG WHITE TEETH.

WOW. I got such an intelligent crew.
Must be all that pizza and beer.

Re: Orcas have destroyed our rudder

Maybe is the Spanish boat yard owners that are the problem ,I have one of them conspiracy theories

You get yourself an orca or two from a marine world that's going out of business ,train them orcas to chew yachties rudder , the coast guard tows you to a yard ,charges 2000 Euro for the tow ,yard then charges you big bucks to fix your boat , that way they make a financial recovery after the covid restrictions

My guess is it would be the ones attacking the test sailboat whose crew would be documenting the orcas behavior and trying different ways to discourage them.....duh

Actually, worse than that Boatie!

Another name for Orcas is Blackfish and word is out that Tilicum was released in the Atlantic and has started a Blackfish Lives Matter movement.
