One year we had a “pet” beluga in our harbor. About half grown, it would show up every other day. Very playful and friendly, the local kids
would get in a skiff and bang the gunnel and the beluga would come over for a belly rub.
He LOVED to tow boats around. They were tied to the dock
with a line out to an anchor
. He would get the anchor
line across his nose and tug the boats around all over dragging the anchor. This went on for months and the last thing I saw as we drove out and I looked back was a skiff being towed.
I also saw a video of a beluga playing “fetch” with a soccer ball, bringing it back to the crew to throw.
The beluga was a much smaller animal than an orca but highly intelligent and social.
I doubt the orcas intended harm but were just having fun with a bobby toy, 3 year old in a bath tub kinda thing. Of course it is a BIG 3 year old and this is minor compensation for the owners or crew.
I am surprised at the amount of damage to the rudder
