Orcas have destroyed our rudder

One of our yacht delivery skippers talks through the recent incident with orcas. At the end of the film you can see the damage done to the rudder. Amazing that they managed to get back to a safe harbour without needing a tow!

Re: Orcas have destroyed our rudder

Very disappointed in orcas for taking the wrong side in the skeg vs. spade debate.

Re: Orcas have destroyed our rudder

One year we had a “pet” beluga in our harbor. About half grown, it would show up every other day. Very playful and friendly, the local kids would get in a skiff and bang the gunnel and the beluga would come over for a belly rub.

He LOVED to tow boats around. They were tied to the dock with a line out to an anchor. He would get the anchor line across his nose and tug the boats around all over dragging the anchor. This went on for months and the last thing I saw as we drove out and I looked back was a skiff being towed.

I also saw a video of a beluga playing “fetch” with a soccer ball, bringing it back to the crew to throw.

The beluga was a much smaller animal than an orca but highly intelligent and social.

I doubt the orcas intended harm but were just having fun with a bobby toy, 3 year old in a bath tub kinda thing. Of course it is a BIG 3 year old and this is minor compensation for the owners or crew.

I am surprised at the amount of damage to the rudder.

Not the first time this pod has messed with sailboats. Hope they grow out of it.

Those orcas need to be harpooned. This is unacceptable, it’s putting peoples lives in danger.

Why not just capture and release.. one could say the same for many people who repeatedly put thousands of lives in danger..
Politicians for example..

Re: Orcas have destroyed our rudder

Orcas are an endangered species. If the "harpooning" suggest was in jest, I apologize, but killing these so-called "killer" whales makes absolutely no sense. A former B.C. resident, I've dived the Inside Passage when orcas were around and while my awareness was somewhat heightened, the pod of about seven wasn't interested in anything but eating salmon.

I've wondered if there is a hydrophone device that could be deployed that could play an annoying or slightly painful sound that would deter this behavior?

I'm afraid you're not even kidding writing this? This is so sad...
I don't even know where to start to explain how wrong you are and this attitude is exactly what destroys our planet.
My only hope is that you are a minority, one that get extinguished soon.

There is a theory, based on anecdotes, that this is what leads to some attacks in the first place. They really don't like some people's music

I don’t destroy planets or just randomly attack people and their boats. Unlike these vicious beasts, I’m not running around destroying boats and putting lives at risk. They need to be culled ASAP.

You've been watching to much Hollywood.. even then it was not random but a male Orca avenging the murder of his mate..
You want to see vicious.. look to your own kind..
