Tried this 96 hour 500mb Atlantic forecast mercator with OpenGl on.
It seems like the fax uses a lot of cpu and is slow. This should work easily, because it has in the past, but I am debugging now with MS VC so it would be a little slower anyway, but not like this I think.
I applied the coords, set the lat long, and the fax seems to be stretched out too much. I hit edit, checked the lat long which is N and W which is normal for me, and I thought I had the entries right, I noticed the coords were not remembered on edit and had to reset them again. Then I applied and Finished and the program bombed. I wonder if I was supposed too hit Reset for mercators or something?
I think Applied should probably be over by Finish or just above Finish, so people realize they must Apply first, then finish. Maybe Finish button ungreys only after Apply is hit?
I restarted MSVC++ still in OpenGL
Tried to load the same file as above, but picked image2.gif, (which I see I put above, will attach the 96 hour here, sorry.) Anyway I did not set it up, hit Cancel. The file was showing in the weatherfax popup, so I hit Delete. and the program bombed with the following:
weatherfax_pi.dll!WeatherFaxImage:perator=(const WeatherFaxImage & __that) + 0x1e bytes C++
weatherfax_pi.dll!WeatherFaxImage::WeatherFaxImage (WeatherFaxImage & img) Line 64 C++
weatherfax_pi.dll!WeatherFaxDialog::EditFaxClicked (wxCommandEvent & event) Line 252 + 0xf bytes C++
weatherfax_pi.dll!WeatherFaxDialog::OpenFaxClicked (wxCommandEvent & event) Line 235 + 0x16 bytes C++
Hope that helps
Here is the correct 96 hour 500mb Atlantic fax file for above.
Sorry, I found out the 96hr 500mb Atlantic was a TIFF, not an imageX.gif I restarted MSVC++, then set OpenGL on, loaded the tiff file below to see if I could recreate the problems with this TIFF mercator file. What do you know, it was slower, but it loaded and displayed fine. I tried to edit it and Finish twice afterwards. Then I deleted it from the weatherfax popup and there were no errors this time. --Don't know what happened maybe the Debugger got corrruppted somehow and restart helped.
Please take the doc off. I guess I am spent on this for now.
I think the issue with the australian fax and the south african ones I have tried is they are not stereographic they use a different formula and I don't know what it is. Because of that the latitudes will never line up properly unless I add another mapping mode to handle it.

Also it looks like you may be planning on putting the Coord Mapping Correction in the left margin under Coords setting... sort of like this?
Input type [dropdown]
Output type Mercator
Size [input]
W/H [input]
Pole X input ^v
Pole Y input ^v
Equator Y input ^v
Get Mapping button [greyed out in mercator or when not used]
True width ratio [Input]
Information button
Apply (before finish) or Reset Button
On my netbook there is no space to fit any more on the right side. If you really want to move stuff around, get wxformbuilder and open the fbo. I think maybe floating menus would work and they could be attached wherever.
So.. it sounds like there is some problem causing crashing with polar images, but possibly depending on the format you loaded. I really have no difference between gif or tiff in the code so I am not sure what to do about that. As for not showing up in nongl mode.. it is probably because the image is too large. The new gl code handles images of any size but probably is also the cause of the crash, you would need to single step to determine where. It probably is somewhere when creating the textures.
I am at a point in development that I am not adding any more features, just trying to make small changes to fix any bugs. If you could, please try to just report the one most major issue you have in concise detail so I can focus on it, then wait for a reply. I am a bit overwhelmed by all the posts it is too much at once and I only get online every 3 days.
I was looking for chart projections used in wx maps and found this in a WMO document.
-------------------------------
Further recommendations can be
found in WMO No. 485 as follows:
4.1.1 The following projections, as appropriate, should be used for weathercharts:
a)
the Stereographic projection on a plane cutting the sphere at the standard parallel of latitude 60°;
b)
Lambert’s conformal conic projection,
the cone cutting the sphere at the standard
parallels of latitude 10° and
40° or 30° and 60°; and
c)
Mercator’s projection with true
-
scale standard parallel of latitude 22.5°.s
--------------------------
Regarding the AUS & SA wx maps. It looks like the "Lambert’s conformal conic projection", could be worth trying.
I understand that some of this is too much to digest, but you wanted Opengl tested and there is polar and mercator.

Sean the suggestion is to make more space for the fax image, I have a reasonbly small screen too. One of suggestions is to move the "Coord Mapping Correction" settings up under the Coords & Lat/Long, thus giving more space for the fax. I think your idea of making it float is good.
Improve user understanding by having the Coord Mapping Correction" appear or "un-grey" only when "Polar" is selected.
Improve user control and understanding by adding very small red and blue up and down arrows to adjust respective latitude lines. Similar red and blue arrows for latitude lines.
Improve user sequencing by having "Apply" active when needed and "Finish" greyed when Active is required.
So you don't think I found any problems after all that? I guess I'll just do one thing at a time now.
It is a great plugin you are making. I have found that the name of the preset in the top left corner sometimes disappear when loading a new map. The preset is there. I would like the “coordinate mapping correction” to be part of the presets if that is possible, since they are the same every time, you use a certain type of map.
Sean, I hope you aren't offended, but a picture is worth a thousand words....I think your idea for a moveable toolbar is good, but for the interim, perhaps something like this would be good for fax space.
At least it might be something to work towards, or to prompt other comments/suggestions.
I think something like the colored arrows are important, because the coord boxes and arrows are not as intuitive (increasing the value moves the line down in some situations). These arrows are relative to how the actual coordinates move!
Also I don't want to forget the idea that when in Polar mode, the first coordinate (red) displays a good sized arrowhead in the direction of the pole (north or south) when applied. This will help the user get it right.
Another thought on the arrows, if colors are not allowed in the controls.
Put the left-right and up-down arrow pairs for Coord 1 just below Coord 1 inputs.
Same for Coord 2 Then they can be black and white, maybe not as clear, but still useful.
2001-06-21-09-00-GYA-11086.wav (15mb)
Sailor54 says with start tone.
-Sorry Sean, could not help myself trying a 15mb file.
It decoded quite fast (using opengl)!
1. Load the file. Can adjust skew. Can't adjust phasing, slider is stuck.
(What is the "Sat" with 2 red lines and one green for? -Saturation? Is green line supposed to cover top red one?)
2. Next. Top appears faded. Can't set coords yet.
See screen shots please.
1. Set Polar Coords -70.-35 and -50.-35 inner blue ring is weird. Repick and set coords several times, hit Get Map, several times. Inner blue ring stays weird (also tried it all again and using -80,-35 and -50,-35)
2. Apply transformation - not straight grid.
Can "Finish", does not show on chart of course, but can pick Edit again.
Then tried 80,-35 and 50, -35 as if north pole. Message popup ...negative.
I pick the same file, and it misses the normal sequence, and the file ends up showing in "Weatherfax" box with none of the Coord routines. Then I try to close the window, and it won't close. Then Opencpn crash.
I am going to have to try this again tomorrow morning with Debug version.
Is this another weird NON-Polar projection?

Opencpn 3.2 is not turned on.

I had similar issues with the polar projections, but I did not get the option to set mapping at all with OpenGL on or off. The same projection worked well with an older plugin version.
Today was the first day I trailed this version.
I like the new look and feel for the most part. Like the idea to have the stuff on the on the side I would suggest that you put items in the order they will be used from top to bottom. Coordinates Mapping Correction above Image Coordinates. This would give more continuity of use.
Can we get the rotate button back. Not all faxes over the radio are send with North up.

+1 please
