Re: WeatherFax ...
@Ozolli
I have finally updated the data directory with your files.
I tried them and while some are working others need some attention.
If you and Bruce Balan are still interested in making more files for ASCAT, that would be wonderful, please add them to this location and I will make a new version. Thank you.
Version 1.9.11.0 is building now, will push to PIM.

Re: WeatherFax ...
I found this idea from another forum intriging. It is like navtex but particular to your location, providing forecast too. Reduced and compressed for effective use of satellite time or inreach time. https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...ts-288176.html

Re: WeatherFax ...
BTW It appears that the weatherfax xml files need to be updated again. This is a job for users, not programmers. Sorry.
Send me the xml updates or make a PR please.

Re: WeatherFax ...
Dear Rick et al,
I am struggling again (and that is since a while already) with the aviationweather satellite images. I have tried to update the files, tried to "build the URL manually from the info in the .xml files, etc. always I endup with the browser hanging and there is no access to the images. Have they moved again? Has anybody any idea, where to find the image repository again? I would be willing ready to update the .XML files....
BTW, Rick, I tried to look at the link you provided above, but I seem to have no authorization - can yoiu help me,what do do?
Best regards,
Uwe

Re: WeatherFax ...
Uwe,
I just saw your message. Aviation Weather website has changed a lot . We may not be able to use them. In fact I think the lastest xmls removed aviation weather.
please make sure you are useing the most current xmls. There is a function to download and update that pavel made in the plugin.
Thanks. Rick

Re: WeatherFax ...
Dear Rick,
I updated the files and get the following:
Failed to Download: Atlantic
https://aviationweather-cprk.ncep.no...at_irbw_b1.jpg
Verify there is a working internet connection.
If the url is incorrect please edit the xml and/or post a bug report.
I tried earlier to "manually" build the URL, as described above, but it just fails.
As you said, the may have moved this somewhere else again, however, do you have any clue, who could provide the correct url? As I said, I would be ready to update the xmls acordingly. :-)
Best regards, Uwe

Uwe, Very sorry but we don't have the option of freezing their work and development, so we just have to keep up somehow.
FYI Others have said that we should abandon aviationweather, that it does not apply any longer.
However I can see value in the Tools > Fax Charts section which is quite large and covers much if not all of the world! US, Canadian, and SigWx
https://aviationweather.gov/fax/
Also keep in mind there are some exciting changes under SigWx
https://aviationweather.gov/sigwx/
Current SigWx:
To view existing SigWx charts on AviationWeather.gov:
- Colored low level, mid level, and high level charts are available as static images on the Decision Support Imagery page, found under the tools dropdown menu
- Black and white Fax charts are available on the Fax Charts page, found under the tools dropdown menu. Select the SigWx from the top of the screen.
Future https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/service...coming-changes
Both WAFC London and WAFC Washington have been working closely together to develop the next generation of WAFS SIGWX forecasts. This will introduce multi-timestep SIGWX forecasts that span T+6 to T+48 at 3-hourly intervals, and which are produced four times daily. The SIGWX forecasts will span FL100 to FL600. Beta data sets are now available on the SADIS API so that users can start getting their systems set up to process and visualise the data.

Re: WeatherFax ...
Tecsun-PL880 antenna question.
Yesterday I made an antenna for the PL-880 as follows and I try to understand why plugging it in at the antenna jack makes zero difference when receiving SW Upper Side Band on 7880Khz. I do receive, but, fax reception is not great. RTTY reception is good, but, as stated above, the antenna makes no difference:
Outside the cabin 10m tinned wire 2.5mm2 crosssection. Hoisted up along a Dyneema shroud.
Attached to it via crimping is a 3m coaxial cable to run inside the cabin. The core of the coaxial attaches to the antenna wire.
I only had a stereo jack plug on-board, attached the shield of the coaxial to the ground of that plug (=tip). The core is attached to one of the two stereo channels. Looking at the mono plug which came with the original wire antenna it does not seem to matter which of the two channels I use.
On the attached image you see the original mono plug on the right side and my screwed on stereo plug in the left.
QUESTIONS:
1)
Is there something wrong with my antenna?
2)
Should I open the radio and check if the antenna jack is connected properly? There is no warranty anymore.
3)
Do I need to add a ground wire?
4)
Where would I attach a ground wire, the PL-880 does not have a ground wire attachment?
5)
If I need a ground wire, should I use coax and how do I need to attach it?
6)
I read, AND SUSPECT THIS TO BE NONSENSE, that it would suffice to spread out some tinfoil under the waterline INSIDE the bilge and attach a groundwire to it. Does that work?
In case I need to attach it to an underwater metal object I'd need to run a 5m long coax wire to a through bolted Anode, which I really would like to avoid.
All our seacocks are Trudesign plastic ones.
We do not have inboard engines and the outboards are lifted normally.
Thanks for any suggestions/help.

Re: WeatherFax ...
Added to the above. RTTY is on a different frequency than fax. Obviously.
Also, apart from this, I tried this with everything off, except the radio.
We are at anchor.
Looking forward to any help on the above.

Re: WeatherFax ...
Found part of an answer, which improves reception with the wire antenna a bit.
On my stereo jack the ground connection is actually the tip.
The antenna wire needs to be attached to this one.
The shield of the coax then to one of the stereo channels.

Re: WeatherFax ...
@Franziska Thank you for pursuing weatherfax and reporting on your progress. Can you keep some notes as you progress through these challenges, so that you can write an short informative article about your experience so that others who follow can learn how?
