Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

Hi cruisers
First of all I have to check whether the Navico-Ethenet RJ45 plug can be inserted into the LAN socket of my windows7 computer.
My LAN socket is probably not compatible ... but it's my turn.....It will take some time ;-)

RJ45 is a common IP plug and certainly used on a Win7 as well? I suggest you read the wiki about the plugin. Most is applicable also for the Halo: https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...dar:br24_radar
Not less the hardware part: https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...e_installation

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

I have succesfully connected radar_pi with my Simrad 3G radar and very excited to start using it. However, the scaling when overlayed on my charts is wrong such that when i zoom in and out on the radar it changes the scale on my overlay ie if i have a land mass 2nm away from me as i zoom in and out on the radar it appears to get closer and further away on the chart. Any ideas how to correct this?

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

chrisryan4...
No idea. I've a 3G myself and I have seen nothing like that.
Some thoughts:
-Did you select correct radar type, i.e. Navico 3G, in preferences.
-Did you set the radar range to Auto.
-Can you explain the expression "when i zoom in and out on the radar"?. When on overlay I use to zoom in and out on OCPN chart or is it that you mean?

A thought comes to my mind. Your expression: "Zoom in/out on my radar..."
Could it be you have the 3G scanner connected to a MFD in the same time when it's connected to OpenCPN?
If that's the case it's the device sending data to the scanner who's master for the moment. If you zoom on the MFD it will change the radar scanner range and it would be a mismatch on OpenCPN.
I've never tried that combination, I've no MFD, so I've no experience from that case

Just a question, how do you "zoom in and out on the radar", is that with the Adjust / Range menu of the radar_pi plugin in OpenCPN, or do you use a MFD for the zooming?
And can you provide screen images before and after the zooming, so we can see the wrong scales?

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

I did also have a plotter connected at the same time but i have tried without and still the same problem.
Within the radar menu under 'Adjust' i have the option to adjust the range. I have the option to set it to 'Auto' or i can adjust the value manually from 1/32nm to 24nm (i have the same issue when set to Auto or when manually set).

I've added some screenshots with different range levels (on the radar). I am in a relatively small bay so the closest returns should be very close but they are all a few miles away on the chart and as i adjust the radar zoom they move further away. Not sure if im explaining it terribly well but hopefully it makes sense

Thanks for your help
Chris

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

Chrisryan,

Indeed there seems to be something wrong here. On the overlay image no radar returns should be present outside the true radar range. On your image 2 this is very clear. To look into this I would ask you following. Stop opencpn. In the opencpn.ini change the value of VerboseLog=1 . After that please repeat the zooming as you did before. After that send us the opencpn.log. You may need to change the file name to opencpn.log.txt to attach to your post.

Apart from this problem, lying anchored in Chatham bay, you should only expect reasonable radar images of your environment on very small ranges, seeing the yachts anchored around you.

Your first image only shows interference, try to increase the interference rejection.

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

Chrisryan..
Strange..
But to complete Douwe's note.

- Power off the radar scanner and disconnect it from the plotter.
- Restart OpenCPN an Power on the radar scanner.
- When the radar is connected start transmision and set radar range in Auto; zoom in and out on the OpenCPN charts. Any difference?

- Could you open radar menu->Window->Info and see if you have got the firmware information. What date is it?
- And BTW for the log file as of Douwe's note. rename it to opencpn.log.pdf instead of .txt. There's a size limit on txt files as well.

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

One other possibility: If this is an older 3G radar it may still have the BR24 firmware. In this case you should select in the radar selection window not 3G but BR24 instead.

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

Douwe, you just found the problem! I changed to BR24 and now it works fine. Looking on the Simrad site it looks like I have the latest firmware for my hardware so will have to stick with BR24

Thanks all for your help

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

I know this is an older discussion, but I was hoping to get some advice. I’ve gotten my radar (Garmin HD) to work on Open CPN 5.0 on a Windows 10 platform. The only problem is the orientation does not overlay the chart properly. I understand I need to give the radar an input as to the orientation of the boat through the electronic compass. I think the previous owner used the autopilot input for that. How do I tell the radar where to go to get the orientation?
Thanks for all your help!!

TaylorO...
As a low priority alternative you can use COG in the absence of a valid heading, try:

Open radar preferences and select "Enable COG as heading"
