Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

Hello,

I have just purchased a boat with Raymarine MFDs, SeaTalkng and a Quantum RADAR.

The RADAR has both wired and WiFi network capability and I believe the boat currently only uses WiFi.

So for one season at least I'll be using the Raymarine system.

Would it be helpful to the dev team if I collected data for this setup?

If it would, what would you need?

This won't happen before June 2020.

John

John...
Thanks for your interest. There have some discussion about this. Read this thread from the first three pages or so.

The initial work process is also described here:
Roboat: Radar
And the paper linked to on that page: http://www.roboat.at/fileadmin/user_...kiEtAl2011.pdf

Same here, bought a boat with existing Raymarine system. Albeit my set up is a little older. I have a Raymarine C125 MFD and an older 4kw 18” HD color Raydome. Happy to help with whatever I can.

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

Implementing Raymarine radar for radar_pi:

For such an implementation the developer needs the radar he is developing for at hand. We did the first implementation for the Navico Halo (very similar to the 4G) without the radar immediately available, with someone very helpful and responsive. But still, it is a slow and difficult process, also for the tester with the radar. He is loading version after version, returning log files and wireshark files time after time. As a developer you have a turnaround time of hours or days, instead of minutes for a single test. And remind that we are not programming from a specification, there is a lot of trial and error to specify the interface with the radar on the fly. So yes, implementing a (which one?) Raymarine radar in radar_pi is possible, if I only had one on my roof and a Raymarine display on my desk.

Hi Håkan,
maybe you or someone else could give me a little help
I just purchased a HELO 20 in order to connect it to OpenCPN 5 with the Radar_PI 5.

I assumed by your post that HELO20 should work (even if it is not listed).
Actually I spent the whole evening to get it work
So I give power to the HALO 20 (+12Vdc on red and yellow wire, Ground to the black wire) and connect the RJ45 plug directly to my Laptop (Win10, i5 with Intel UHD620).

This did not work. So I put a simple network switch with DHCP server in between and disabled the windows firewall. Getting there.
I Enabled Navico HALO A and HALO B in the plug-in Radar preferences.
At least HALO B is showing now some kind of serial# but the TX button is still greyed out...

I have no ideas anymore ... maybe this device is not supported?

Any ideas or at leat confirmation that the HELO20 should generally work?

Best regards
Sixten

So let's find out what you mean.
Halo A / Halo B is the same antenna just a opportunity to use two radar pictures. So Halo A would be enough as a start. You may have to right click to find the menu panel. (Show radar, Control Halo A, Control Halo B etc)

Some kind of Info - Is that the info window as of my shot. (Even if it's a Emulator) If there's a serial number the antenna would have been found. Are all requirements fulfilled? OpenGl, heading true or WMM active.

-Button still grayed out--- Start/Stop? What's the text in the button?

A screen shot of your controls may be a help.

Sixten...
Actually there is an update of the plugin to some points regarding the Halo connection. Give it a try.

Expand "Assets" if needed.

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

Hello again,

maybe this answers some questions you asked :

So I discovered that there pops-up an error message as you can see on the screen. If enabling HALO A and HALO B it maybe that HALO B gets a bit further so depending on the network setup there is sometimes a serial number.

Thanks to your explanation I understood I just need HALO A which immediately throws the error message.

I provide sensor data (actually also by simulation) to OPenCPN which seems to be recognized (Heading, Position, Time, Speed). WMM is also active.
From the Screenshot and Radar PPI I assume OpenGL is also working (but maybe not due to having two GPUs inside the Laptop - INtel and AMD).

I would now assume that the error message comes from the task which should subscribe to the Multicast. If this fails maybe there is no Radar recognized?

I still use a simple switch with DHCP active (my Laptop gets the 192.168.1.100 and the HALO20 gets the 192.168.1.101).

On Wireshark I can see both talking - but unfortunately not with each other :-(

(192.168.99.1 is the switch)

Is there maybe a log file in the Radar PI or OPenCPN which could help?

I downloaded and installed it (on top of the official Radar PI), it does not seem to make any difference

Hi Sixten,

Can you change the logging by putting in the opencpn.ini file VerboseLog=9, it will then log all receive events of the radar. Then run OpenCPN with the radar (latest version of radar_pi) as before. After that send us the opencpn.log file. To put it on this forum you may have to change the name to a .txt. From this log file we may understand what is wrong.
If you can also send the wireshark recording, even better, though first analysis will be from the log. If you need direct mail to me use radar 'at' douwefokkema.nl

We should get this radar working.

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

Thank you very much for your instant help!
Without your help I would never never have solved it.

After having a closer look to Håkan's screenshot I have seen that he uses a 5.0.4 beta 6 which I haven't found under the released versions in GitHub.

But there was a request for solving a HALO24 issue which sounded quite similar to mine. In the thread there was a link by you Douwe to the beta 6 and stating that this version would solve the issue.
https://github.com/opencpn-radar-pi/radar_pi/issues/124

And yes, it did it also for my HALO20.
At least I can now transmit and get some video paint.

I am soooo happy

Thanks to everyone you are GREAT!

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

Sixten..
Thanks for the report.
Sorry for pointing to the released beta 4 only. So you did found the beta 6 version, did you?
Douwe making the last Halo update may have something to add here as well.
For info is OpenCPN soon to be equipped with a inbound plugin loader avoiding obstacles to find the last stable release of a plugin.

To get the Radar on my Cockpit Android tablet I assume to use VNC or similar to copy from the charttable Laptop, right?

Cheers

Yes, I think that VNC is a perfect method. I use it all time.
Different VNC brands has different philosophy how to handle mouse and keyboard strokes. Test and judge yourself.
I also use a wireless roll ball PC mouse in cockpit for faster response compared to VNC touch movements.

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

Reading between the lines that there will be probably never a Radar Plugin for Android devices and having VNC as a good working solution, I am now thinking of replacing my Windows Laptop by a Rasberry PI (without a display but in a virtual screen resolution of my Android device).

So here's my question: Is it possible to use the (Linux) Radar Plugin also on a Rasberry PI and use the Android device (via VNC) as a wireless remote Radar display (for my HALO20 as it works with Radar Pi 5.0.4 beta 6)?

Thanks again for your great support!
