Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.4 Released

Hello, thanks for next release of the great application. I use Raspberry Pi 4 and BBN with OpenCPN 5.8.4. Recently I bought maps of Greece and there was big problem with the map performance. I contacted o-charts guys and somehow they made a quick fix (apparently the map has same cells that cannot be rendered quickly, so they masked them). As the result of the fix there is no coastline of the neighborhooding map (in this case cost of Turkey). They advised to hide the tile where the map is not visible. But here is the problem: normally there should be a popup dialog window when right click on the "piano tiles" but in my case there is no such a window... Do you know why?

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.4 Released

That's an issue with the BBN distro, the right click on the chart piano is not available.
OpenPlotter on RasPi is ok.

The two chart files of the GR set in question creating havoc on RasPis are the usage band 2 charts, those are ending in ....2 in the oesu set.
OC-30-LT7FA2.oesu and OC-30-HU7FA2.oesu in that case.

As far as we can tell disabling those two charts does not hide any information. The larger scal usage band 3 charts are covering the complete area of those two cells.

Thanks for this info. How to disable those two charts? Shall I just delete them from chart forlder?

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.4 Released

That's the "brute force" option. The better one is to use the chart disabling function of the chart piano.

In the first case rebuild the chart data base.

It doesn't work on OpenPloter... I had to remove the file and rebuild the database

When the battery of the xgps160 is totally empty recharging will get the battery very hot but it is not dead. So it is better to keep the XGPS160 always connected to the 5V power supply especially during long journeys.
Thanks CarCode. You have mentioned your experience with the XGPS160 in previous posts. I wish I had your experience. As I mentioned, I had 3 previous failures of the XGPS160 and I am now on my 4th device. In all cases, the device became extremely hot, and eventually the XGPS160 would die and refuse to restart. I have a spare new battery and changed it out, but the PCB board was fried in all 3 cases.

One XGPS160 was replaced by the vendor under warranty, and the 3rd device was replaced by Dual at no charge after I spent over a month disassembling the failed XGPS160 and sending Dual photos. That is the one I am now using.

I am using the USB charger supplied with the device and my battery voltage is always in the range of 12.3 - 13.6 volts. I use the XGPS160 infrequently, and I only connect the charger when I am on a long voyage - 5 to 60 days. This is when the failures occurred. I tried leaving the 1st XGPS160 connected to the charger, but the device overheated and failed.

The XGPS160 is a great device as it connects to all of my Apple devices. However, its has not been reliable for me. Unfortunately, I have not found a suitable GPS Bluetooth or USB device that will work with my new 16" MBP M2 running Venture.

Thanks for your feedback.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.4 Released

Hello all,

I have a strange problem with 5.8.4 on android 13.

When I use a connection to Signal K and the Signal K server is down OpenCPN crashes. OpenCPN crashes immediatly if the Signal K server is not availible at startup. OpenCPN is installed on a Oukitel RT 5 with android 13. The Signal K server is on Rpi3+.

OpenCPN 5.8.4 on android 12 with same configuration runs without any problem.

Regards

Markus

Markus...
Thanks for the report.
We do see reports for that particular crash on the Google app crash reporting stack. Working to isolate and reproduce now. As you report, the fault does not seem to occur on Android/12. Testing other devices...

Thanks again.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.4 Released

Markus...
Couple of questions on the signalK crashes you observe, if you have the time.

1. Are you using a numeric ip address to the sK server, on your local network?
2. Does the crash happen immediately on startup of OCPN on the Android device? Or is there some time delay?

Thanks
Dave

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.4 Released

Hello, i have a problem with the version 5.8.4,
When i right clic, and " (naviguer jusq'ici) navigate to here", OpenCpn send the nmea0183 RMB sentence at at least 4000 Hz !
And it's too big for my computer !
When i use Opencpn 5.6.2, OpenCpn send the nmea0183 RMB sentence at about 1 Hz, it's cool.
Thanks,
Jotec

Crash on W11(5.8.4) and Android(5.8.4-102) when putting together two routes.

Create two routes.
Drag the last waypoint of the route 1 to the first waypoint of the route 2
You get a message, "Replace this route point by the nearby waypoint"
Click "yes"
You get a message, "full route be appended to dragged route"
click "yes"

Click on the resulting route = crash

I tried several times to reproduce this on W10 Home and could not. I get the pop-ups mentioned and join the 2 routes, but no crash.

I also tried several times on my W11 Pro machine with the same result (same pop-ups, say yes, the route joins together, and no crash).

Are these really long routes? (my test routes were fairly short silly routes, 7-8 waypoints each going only a short way). If yours are really long routes, maybe there's something else going on.

Is your system in English or some other language? Are they named routes or just temporary routes? Are the waypoints named by you, or auto-named by OpenCPN?

If it is reproducible on your system, maybe you could zip up your 2 routes and attach them here (rename zip file as PDF to attach).

Edit: I played a bit more on my W11 and never caused a crash. I did however notice that when the 2 routes were joined, it also left one of the original routes there. Created Route A and Route B, dragging endpoint of Route A to start point of Route B, created the joined Route C, which is the composite of A and B. However, when you delete Route C, Route B is still there. (It's late at night and I didn't confirm this by naming them all, and double-checking what happened, but visually, this is what happened).

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.4 Released

It is invariable for me and I don't think it is linked to the route size, neither to the platform as I have the same behavior on my tablet Android.
Just create two routes with some points each (2 or 3 are enough.).
But the process can change something.
Scenario 1
I move the last point of the route 1 to the first point of the route 2, then I click to leg of route. I get an immediate crash.
But if I open and close the route manager before clicking on the leg, then there is no crash. (In this case with Android, the route manager refuse to open.)
Scenario 2
I move the first point of route 2 to the last point of route 1. There is no crash, but the legs of ex route 1 are not selectable.

Remark: when I get a crash, it is sometime difficult to re-open O. I have one or several crashes and then it opens.

Are you editing the active route? See this bug report.

No, no active routes. But if I understand well the process who leads to your crash, It looks very similar, as at one moment in your scenario, a route is happened to another.
