Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.4 Released

Hi All,
Thanks as always for the new release.
Anyone having trouble uploading routes to Garmin GPS using Garmin mode. Was working great before. Now get error that Garmin GPS is not connected.
I do know there is a connection to the serial port as OpenCPN gets GPS data when GPS is set to NMEA output. I then change the GPS to Garmin mode put cannot upload routes.

Should I rollback to 5.8.2 to check if this is a 5.8.4 problem? Or has anyone else seen this?
Cheers,
Bruce

I upgraded my MacBook Pro to the new 2023 16" MBP Apple M2 Max with 64 GB memory and MacOS Ventura. I previously used a 2018 15" MBP with Intel chipset and OS Monterey. The old MBP worked fine with my Columbus V-800 data logger. However, the new 16" MBP does not recognise the V-800 in OpenCPN 5.8.4/Options/Connections Add Connection/Serial/DataPort.

So, is the problem caused by:
- the the change to Apple Silicon
- the change to Ventura
- the change to OpenCPN 5.8.4

I have emailed Columbus and have not received any response after repeated requests.

Appreciate any help I can get from the Community.

Best regards - Kevin Hiscox
5.8.2 worked OK

Hi Bruce - like your mbtiles charts by the way.

I have a Garmin GLO2 GPS, but have newer been able to get it connect with any versions of OpenCPN on my MBP. OpenCPN sees it in Options/Connections and I can configure it, but it just won't connect. I am having trouble connecting a Columbus V-800 in OpenCPM 5.8.4. It previously worked with 5.8.2, so I suspect that there is an issue with 5.8.4. I reported my issue 2 posts earlier than this one.

Thanks, Kevin. Good to know. Much appreciated.

The problem is that the V-800 does not appear in the Options/Connections/Add Connection/Serial/DataPort. All that appears in the DataPort is '/dev/cu.Bluetooth-Incoming-Port'. The V-800 port used to appear with my old MBP.

I reinstalled O5.8.2 on my new MBP and the V-800 does not appear in DataPort, so I guess the problem is caused by the change to Ventura or the upgrade to MBP M2. The V-800 USB dongle never appeared in the Mac System Settings/Bluetooth in either the Old or New MBP, so there is no way of deleting and reinstalling the driver.

I am stumped. Any clues?

Kevin...
Leaving OCPN aside for a moment, is there any other app on your MBP M2 that can access the V-800?

No, does not work with any apps on my MBP M2. Used to work with OpenCPN and Apple Maps on my MBP Intel.

However, both apps work on my MBP M2 using a Dual XGPS160, although, I had to delete the XGPS160 and reinstall it in Bluetooth preferences to get it to work. I suspect the V-800 will be a lost cause as I am getting no response from the developer.

Shame because the V-800 ran off the MBP USB port and no batteries to crap out on month long ocean voyages. I had 3 XGPS160's crap out on me because of battery failure on long voyages (overheating).

You can order a new battery from e.g.
https://www.batteryupgrade.de/shopBr...oupId=86583376
When the battery of the xgps160 is totally empty recharging will get the battery very hot but it is not dead. So it is better to keep the XGPS160 always connected to the 5V power supply especially during long journeys.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.4 Released

Hello Dave,

If you look at this French forum thread Hisse-et-oh, you will see the image which is attached:

https://www.hisse-et-oh.com/sailing/...ieu-en-cas-de- crash#64a9428939819f513e70dcb7
For a long time, the OpenCPN user had a window like the one in the example that was displayed when he was in a collision route (with O562, and now with O584.).

As we can see, the button located at the bottom of the window was invisible. It was impossible to close the window by acknowledging the alert. Many of us have looked for a solution and it was Schnaps (Schnapsy) who found the explanation.

The font size was too large. The user said : "The font size which is automatically set to 20! I reduced to 6 and everything is good with a small white square (too bad we can't move it!").

As a result, the window was larger than the screen.

Could it be that, no matter what, such a window could never be larger in width or height than the size of the screen?

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.4 Released

Again Hello Dave,

The attached screenshots show items that are not on the same options display page.

First item:"Voir la fenêtre de dialogue pour ces alarmes" (Show CPA/TCPA Alert Dialog).
It is in "Options/Boat/AIS", at the very bottom of the page. (See where the mouse arrow is)

Second item : "Si alerte AIS : Jouer le son". (Play Sound on AIS Alert.)
It is in "Options/User/Alerts: Sounds". (See where the mouse arrow is)

It is really difficult for a user to understand that the first item must be checked in order to check or uncheck the second item.

I think you have correctly identified the required fix for this problem. Well done.
I will see that it is implemented in the next Android update.

Thanks
Dave
