Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.4 Released

.... so sorry - but this is as always, you deliver incomplete information and cause unnecessary work .... Sorry again, so, here is the setup:

I have windows 11 and all the surrounding stuff, and OpenCPN works fine. The conversion from Track to Route is a matter of milliseconds, regardless which method you choose (route manager, out of the track dialog, etc.).

However, I am running a rpi 4, 8GB with a SSD attached, Buster, Flatpak, OpenCPN 5.8.4 - and here, only here I get this mysterious hang during track to route conversion.

As mentioned, there might be a problem with my system, so, if somebody could test this on a raspberry with the above environment, it would be great, I am a bit stuck at the moment.

As to the raspberry, I installed it fixed on my boat and use it as THE Nav computer, connected to everything on board including pypilot. It is by far not as fast as a "normal" Windows Laptop, but consumes much less power and - using a "normal" display I have a luxurious plotter.... In my opinion this seems to be an excellent Nav-computer - and - of course, I run the 64 Bit version .... This, I think, will prevail over the 32bit versions....

Anyway, if anybody has a clue as to the problem mentioned above, it would be most appreciated.

Best regards, Uwe

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.4 Released

Some more points to the above:

OpenCPN 5.8.4-1+1637c28
Plugin API: 118

This is my installation.

Further I did several tests with plugins disabled and and also starting in OpenCPN safe mode. Results are all the same. Looking at the Log files, I do not see anything that would be meaningful for me. My impression is, that the logging just wasn't able to write the data out.

On one occasion OpenCPN hung and then crashed. On other occasions I was able to stop OpenCPN by using "Force Quit".

When enabling the RADAR plugin OpenCPN hang too and then crashed.

Then crash during restart.

Then everything works again.

As I said, it might be that there is something with my system and I might have to format and re-install. However before doing so, maybe somebody can have a look into this? The hang (and probable crash) during track to route conversion seems to me the most promising way to analyse, if this too happens on other installations like mine. O.K.??

Best regards and many thanks - as always,

Uwe

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.4 Released

I reconfirm Uwe's observation. On my Pi4 (OpenCPN 5.8.4, Bullseye) "route from track" also crashes. It works fine on the Mac, but not on the Pi.

Here is a screen shot of the crash. O is in the process of opening a window, but does not even manage to draw the background.

For a while others apps can be activated, but after half a minute or so, the PI is completely frozen and needs to be unplugged to restart.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.4 Released

... I agree, same effects as Manfred - I wasnīt sure, whether this is an error, or a defect somewhere in my system. So, it seems to be an error and it looks as if this is leading to this general feeling of instability.. As mentioned before, maybe following the path to diagnose the track/route conversion problem will eliminate this as well. Seems to be some central point in the raspberry conversion of the code. ...

best regards,
Uwe

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.4 Released

O-chart plugin zooming and moving charts around seems really slow on raspberry pi 4 bullseye wxWidgets 3.0 version.

There are videos on Facebook OpenCPN forum.

With NOAA ENC working perfectly fine on same type of system.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.4 Released

Hur et al...

Some testing here. RPi-4, Bullseye, OpenCPN 5.8.4, tested in both native and flatpak configurations.

Using fairly long track (750 points), no problem converting from Track to Route, as described above by Sherry. Happens very fast, no crash.

Perhaps there is something unusual about the tracks used for conversion, for both you and Aldebaran. It might be useful to export and post a known failing track here for analysis.
Thanks
Dave

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.4 Released

Dear Dave,

I am definitely sorry to bother you with this. Further, looking around, my feeling is, that the must be something wrong with my system, as there are severl behaviours of OpenCPN, which are very unusual (e.g. connections fail, etc.).

However, here is what I did:
Today I created a "weather route" - which in fact is a "Track"

Exported the Track as .GPX.
Then tried to do 2route from Track

This failed - I had to finally switch off the rpI and restart.

Restarting OpenCPN, the Track was gone.

So I re-imported the track and tried to convert to a route - system hangs ...

The track is attached...

I hope this helps.

If this is all not reproducible at your place,I think, I will build up the system again from scratch, o.k.??

Thanks again and best regards,

Uwe

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.4 Released

My obersvation is, that once "Track to Route" is called, OpenCPN allocates memory until the system crashes. Before, OpenCPN is happy with close to 300 MB, once starting to convert it allocates memory at some 100MB per second, so that after 30 sec my Pi crashes.

Here a screen shot close to the crash. I have to correct my message from above: Pi OS is running in german and OpenCPN is running in english, but I doubt that this is of any importance.

... my observations are in synch with Manfredīs. However my system is configured:

Language: en (English)
Country: US (United States)
Character Set: UTF-8

Downloading and checking your track I see your boat might have been damaged while sailing over land. Is this the reason perhaps you have problems?

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.4 Released

BDBCAT,
I changed last week from V5.6.2 to the latest V5.8.4.. Since the connection with my Shipmodul Mulltiplexer (NMEA 183 on USB/COM3 at 4800 b.) is not active anymore. The AIS (hardware Serial COM2 at 38.400 b.) comes trough. I tried meanwhile a lot.
Deleted Com ports and installed the Shipmodul firmware again. The Shipmodul sofware shows me the NMEA output senteces; but OPENCPN doesn't (2 connections AIS/COM2 at 38.400 and Shipmodul/COM3 at 4800.
Do you have any suggestion what I can do/try further? It migt be something stupid I'm missing.....
