Re: Feature Requests

Thanks for responses, I will play with the add-ons. Was hoping to see it as part of the base program.

Appreciate the assist.

Re: Feature Requests

OpenCPN does not have something like a "route-checker" yet.
You might want to request it at flyspray, the bug-tracker and follow-up system for OpenCPN. At Opencpn.org.

If you would use this feature, register for tracker and vote for it here

Re: openCPN for ubuntu 17:10

Kurt,

OpenCPN is usually packaged for long term support (LTS) Ubuntu releases only. There are good reasons for that: one is that intermediate releases are a fast moving target and are not long lived enough to be worth the hassle and developers' time. Another reason is the thinking, that if you want to build a nav station for your boat, you want a long supported stable OS platform, because it is a somewhat mission critical piece of equipment on board.
That being said, if you want to play with the latest Ubuntu release, compiling OpenCPN is documented and quite straightforward. Did you give it a try? Had any problems?

Re: Feature Requests

Hi Dave et al.

I Don't know if this will get much traction but...

I am trying to reprogram my Garmin GPS19X. It is an OEM receiver.
I am using PuTTY under Linux, and need to re-wire the connections then send the parameters, then re-wire and then start O again to see the results.

The feature that would be easy and an interesting addition is;

Under Connections add an input box labeled "Send Custom String to this connection"

This way, I could send $PGRMCE to the GPS and immediately see the response in the NMEA monitoring window. Then I can also see the result of any change on the chart.

Many thanks for considering it.

Re: Feature Requests

Would allow to program static data of AIS "A" transceivers too...
(Although a decent user interface would be more user-friendly in this case)

Snore..
The Plugins to OpenCPN are to be seen as different modules to O not external "add-ons". Since all features in different Plugins are not used by everyone it would be unnecessarily to (over)load them to all users. Any activated plugin will though act as a part of OpenCPN.
Do try OCPN_Draw_pi, there's a lot of exciting features not less in combination with Watchdog_pi, as mentioned.

Re: Feature Requests

Sounds like a useful idea. Perhaps it should be entered into Tracker as a Feature Request so it is not lost? If you haven't done so, you'll need to register. https://opencpn.org/flyspray/

Thanks,

...and don't forget to VOTE for it!

sy_gilana..
For me this seems as a seldom used feature especially for the average user. If I remember correct a similar technic have been discussed for to set up an AIS transceiver but I think most agreed to use the normal set up program for such seldom used activities. The same would appear here.

What you may try is to:
> Save the sentence you want to send to the GPS unit in a text file.
> Set the OCPN GPS port connection parameters to output all but normal GPS NMEA sentences.
> Use the VDR plugin and play you text file.

@mrm,

thanks for the reply.
Yes I tried to compile myself and followed a HowTo in

https://mark911.wordpress.com/2016/0...04-lts-64-bit/

But I got error messages I didn't understand. and ended up not successfully.

Re: Feature Requests

Kurt,

Look at instructions in developers manual at OpenCPN.org

For most Ubuntu flavors building is quite simple.

Re: Feature Requests

<EDITED>
I have a feature request, which may exist in some form, but I have yet to find them. If anyone knows how to accomplish these, feel free to ping me.

First, a simple explanation: Most of my use of the program is while doing scientific research surveys. Due to that, we use tracks and waypoints primarily, while attached to the vessel's NMEA string. The program is great for tracking and easily exportable, so kudos to all involved.

Feature: Add a time stamp to a dropped mark automatically. The same as is done with the MOB marker, but without the corresponding added features.

Thanks!

It is a standard feature in some other programs, like Hypack.

Wade,

when changing the OwnShip symbol to a scaled one you can enter the value for the GPS position. And the position will be drawn as a small circle at the correct place on the boat.

But this will not offset the position of measurement points (as far as I know..)
