So it is ok for you to cause suffering to an animal that has no idea that it is doing wrong? It cannot drink, and because it only sweats through it's tongue it cannot do that either. A truly despicable act that should have severe consequences on you.

Is this really the same person? Ready to assault someone who goes aboard his boat to stop his halyards slapping, but boards another's boat and tapes a dog's mouth shut? Well done, Cburger; this thread was ripe for some satirical exaggeration for effect!
Just to get my oar in the water here, I will say that I have silenced a few halyards myself, with some old twine. Somewhere I read of the idea of fitting some small hooks on the spreaders to secure halyards away from the mast; I may try this on my boat.

Dang, I am glad I have good neighbors! We had some heavy winds a few weeks back and I went topside to better secure one of my halyards. While up there, a 40 knot gust rolled through and I could hear banging and clanging on other docks, but ours was quiet...except for the wind sound.

I'd bet lunch he is trying to show that either is wrong, boarding someone else's boat, is just wrong. I'm sure he did nothing to secure the noise maker, be it a halyard or a dog.
I see his point, but it's not clear cut. I've asked politely from my live aboard neighbors if they see something wrong with my boat, please board it and investigate, loose halyards included. They don't need to hear it for a week, waiting for my return on Fri.
They are there every day and I'm not, I see liveaboards as a huge security asset.

After a hour of the line slapping I would guess the dog would stop barking and then become a bumper and weight.

My halyards are secured to stantions. The clevis may rattle on occasion but no banging can happen. The lazyjacks are more difficult to keep quiet. Bungies and more bungies. Usually the loudest noise from my boat is my orbital sander and shop vac.....or me laughing at a CF post.
