I would say, if you are going to mess with someone's lines on their boat, make it obvious that something has been done. I had a helpful neighbor apparently do some weird thing to my halyard. It was wound around something, cannot remember how at the time, but in a way that was very hard to notice until I, singlehanded, tried to raise the mainsail. Had to untangle everything in some seas and it was not a safe situation.
Also irritating when someone re-ties the jib sheets but does so incorrectly so they are on the wrong sides of the boat.

I have to say I struggled with getting the halyards on my Bristol to never clank at any wind direction, to the point where at the end of every sail I was messing about with bungee cords for 20 mins.

As part of the re-rig last year, I had them internalised, inside the mast. Now all is quiet. It's even quieter under sail (the jib halyard used to clank), plus I save 20 mins every time I sail.

Slapping Halyards, Water slap agains the hull, clanging bells, sea gull cries, whale farts, are ALL a part of the lifestyle.

Slapping halyards are a sign of laziness, insular selfishness, and poor seamanship. Slapping halyards are not only auditorially obnoxious, but by allowing them to clang away, you are likely damaging the lines, and whatever they are striking.

As CarinaPDX so eloquently put it, slapping halyards are a sure sign of an inexperienced cruiser. Luckily, most people new to an activity or lifestyle make attempts to understand the culture they are joining. Sadly, some don't.

What's the big deal? I never cared if someone came onboard and secured a slapping line while I was away. I would have thanked them. Same if a dock line has come undone or a plug unplugged or a light left on by mistake. A boat that is ship shape should not have any flapping loose and wearing lines or leaking thru hulls or torn sails.. Etc. I've gone on board and secured many slapping lines... No malice or anything just made them fast and felt like I had done a good thing for both them and me!

No I live in the hood. So I would take slapping halyards and clanging bells to gun fire and rap music every time. Working nights I used to get annoyed by birds. After last winter I love them.

Slappy halyards are no fun at 3 am when they are on the boat beside yours and you would rather sleep than suffer the serenade. A big North Easter blew through here yesterday and they were going off all day and night.

So the boat that was responsible for me starting this thread arrived in the mooring field this week. This boat now has been next to us for 5 years and we have asked nicely, left them notes, boarded the boat in the middle of the night and secured the lines. Each time they have responded by securing the halyard, for a while. But it must just be way too hard for them to regularly take the 20 seconds after each sail, so there it was banging away this weekend :banghead

Mine are tight. I just realized I have something banging in my mast. Go figure. Oh well next winter project.

I've a neighbor that has two things that are LOUD, one is the boom, it's an in boom furler and the thing absolutely howls in the wind.
The other is that Damn wind generator, he's plugged into shore power, why the wind generator?
