My god man! This means you’ve never had a Ruben Sandwich! It’s almost like saying you haven’t ever had a cheeseburger. So good. Go to a good deli and get one today- with extra Russian dressing on the side. So good. If you cheap out you will be disappointed. (Or I would, anyway).

But CANNED corned beef isn't anything like corned beef purchased from a deli!

Tristan Jones seems to have lived almost solely on corned beef--it's the food he talks about most in his books, IIRC.
I find it good for an occasional meal--a step above Spam, but far below canned tuna or chicken. I could maybe do a dozen cans in a 6-month cruise.

Agreed. canned corned beef is more like the corned beef hash (canned corned beef with diced, boiled potatos) that you can get at just about every breakfast joint up and down the Eastern US seacoast.

Corned beef hash is one of my favorite breakfast foods. Fry it in a pan, toss it across a couple of slices of toast. Get really fancy and top with a couple of over easy eggs and hollandaise sauce.

I find I can get Salt Beef and Salt Pork most anywhere in the Easter Caribbean. Better than can ed corn beef.

How's the meat quality there? I saw dull looking steaks but don't want to assume they aren't tasty based on appearances alone. Supposedly grocery stores where I'm from put red dye in the meat to make it look better. Definitely considering trucking my boat to Florida or Atlantic Mexico and heading to the Caribbean. My landlubber vacation there was amazing.

Canned chicken is definitely available at Costco in Cabo and in the marina Tienda in Puerto Escondido. Normally we eat real chicken but prior to getting an Engel freezer, we used the canned stuff when on passage.

Costco in Cabo has pretty much everything that Costco's elsewhere have.

Also, i agree, a Rueben is made with real, not tinned, corned beef and it is delicious. But I won't condemn the tinned stuff yet because I haven't tried it and seems no more unhealthy than the stuff from a deli.

No one said to make a Ruben with canned corned beef. The Ruben reference was to Chotu saying he’s never had corned beef. Of course a Ruben is only made with “real” corned beef. I’m not a complete savage. Now that that’s cleared up….

OK, I guess I may have had that before in a deli like 20 years ago. getting that mixed up a little with pastrami.

I stopped eating all of that so long ago I don’t even remember any of it

The pastrami Reuban more common around here, but pastrami is smoked corned beef so tomato/tomatoe.
I only remember Tristan Jones as a big fan of "Burgoo", breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Corned beef is not an Irish food. If you order it there, you will get nothing but a puzzled look.

Being an American of Irish descent, I've heard that immigrants would buy corned beef from Jewish delis as a substitute for Irish bacon, which generally is not available here.

Also, don't confuse Irish bacon with the thin strips we Americans consume. It ain't the same thing.

Whew close call, the words were on the tip of my tongue. New York Deli’s base there reputation on the real corned beef and it’s spicey sister pastrami.

KATZ'S DELICATESSEN on Houston st. (Pronounced house-ton) if your gonna give it a go get the 100% authentic best representation of a corned beef experience on rye with mustard and my fav a can of celery soda. It’s not cheap but you will definitely have a take away food and memories. A true NYC experience.
They have Ruben kits online they will ship but not outside the U.S. I think.

But to the OP what about your sodium levels? All the sodium and preservatives?
It’s like we could take your blood pressure with a timing gun lol.
(Does anybody remember a timing gun?)

I get the need for protein, I’m in the dryed legumes camp, we have an extensive spice and flavored sauce inventory when cruising.

pirate Re: Can I Get Cans of Corned Beef in Cabo San Lucas or LA Paz Mexico?

Someone gave me 20 1lb cans of corned beef in Oriental before I headed off for the UK in '05..
I opened one can on day 20 before I reached the Azores, tasted one spoonful and threw it overboard.. gave the other 19 tins to someone in the UK 50 days later who, not having any sense of smell or taste, enjoyed it hugely..
Mind.. you guys enjoy vomit in wraps so not surprised it's big over there..
