And how she looked in 2006 after the rebuild prior

I must say, I'm surprised they got the same company and yard involved in the second refit if they did such a crap job in the first place as is claimed
Depends on your standards. Are you happy with a 50m, 20m, 10m or mirror finish job. This looks ok from 50m away where the photo was taken from.

It's a timber boat.
Have you any idea, any at all about what you are talking about?

Google "Yacht Cariad" and tell us why you think they aren't capable?

And the owner is running out of PSS Satun again, where they did Cariad.
Gee, I'm several thousands of miles away and knew that much.
Like all good rogue operators. When caught out, shut down, relocate and re-open with no accountability.

You’re confused. I’m talking about Silver Lining, an alloy 100ft S&S built in Satun.

Like you said, they shoulda stuck to timber.

The OP hasn’t responded since the beginning so he has all he needs to know, or he was just fishing. so there is no value in keeping it open.

Sailboat refits in Thailand

I remember the alloy hull (Silver Lining) arrival quite well but always thought the failed welding was primarily the fault of the Chinese shipyard where she was built and Thai shipyard re welded it then fitted out the bare hull. I’m aware of several major fitout failures in Thailand including the spectacular rollover at launch of one very large charter vessel. Boat lagoon does some very impressive refits and paint jobs but I doubt that its much cheaper than Australia.

Sounds like this one

Oh wait, that happened in America.

My point being, once again, is that bad work ethics, bad workmanship, bad design happens the world over.

Re: Sailboat refits in Thailand

But getting back to refit in Thailand and pricing.

Cariad done in Thailand has had refits costing around $2 million
Sounds like a crazy amount of money but.....

Bluenose a similar style of thing had her 2017 refit done in Canada for $24 million
Rudder alone was $1 million.
Job was lowballed by $10 million

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-...dder-1.4219098

But hey, Thailand is a ripoff .........apparently

A westerner on a thai marriage visa doesn’t make them an immigrant allowed to work. If you deal with that foreign run marine services business at PSS (formerly at Krabi Boat Lagoon) you’re risking your boat being impounded if you’re unlucky enough to be there when the Thai labor department rock up one day to check. Guilty by association.
The price of labour might be cheap but it’s all the hidden costs that add up and nobody talks about.

Yes a good project. There’s plenty of Canadians in Phuket who like to offer advice. Check the super yacht community. And the bonus is you can pick up an lbfm on the cheap for the refit period. Make sure you stick to wh&s standards and stay focussed on the exit plan or you could end up stuck there sponsoring the whole village.

Re: Sailboat refits in Thailand

Now that you have reopened an old thread, I assume that the boat repair industry in Phuket is back open. When the sunami wiped out the bars in Patong Beach, most were cleaned out, restocked with girls and booze, and reopened within 48 hours. The Thai are energetic hard working people, and they don't wait around.

I also have first hand experience with Honda motorbikes made in Thailand, because we rented one from one of the girls in the boatyard for $60/month. A quality machine, so much better than the knockoff Honda I rented in Sri Lanka. Let's not talk about the girls, because our wives will not let us stay in Phuket without a chaparone.

Re: Sailboat refits in Thailand

Stories of refit debacles in Southern Thailand never get old. Some get stuck doing the “L’kawi Loop” for visas and cheap rum pretending they’re still sailors, others leave with a shiny paint job that fades 6 months later. Whatever you do don’t take a roadie. Like the food, they don’t travel well.

I lived in Thailand for 18 Months (long time ago) as a dive instructor - We used to do the Burma run for the visa, until I got myself a 1 year business visa.

Always ate at street vendors and non tourist Thai restaurants and found the food fantastic - Never got ill once, also had a Honda Scooter I purchased for buttons, which was fantastic for getting around and also trouble free.

It was one of the best 18 month periods of my life
