Engine Spares For Remote Cruising

I am planning to be far from civilization this summer, and so am reconsidering my spares list for my Yanmar 4JH3 HTE.

Here's how the list looks now:

Spare injectors & lines
Case of Racor filters
Several Yanmar fine filters
Oil filters & plenty of lube oil in 20l canisters
Spare fuel hose
A spare of every belt and hose on the engine
Spare starter
Spare sea water pump
Spare fresh water pump
Spare impellers
Spare thermostat

Have I missed anything?

Mind as well include a lift pump, alternator and the gaskets/ o rings necessary to replace all the spares.

Alternator ?
We seemed to go through them in the charter yachts quicker than the belts
Sail drive/ gear oil ?
Impellers and even a complete pump, or at least the wipe seals

Good list. Make sure you have all the tools for any repairs or parts changing.

re: Engine Spares For Remote Cruising

I carry all of the items mentioned above except for the sea water pump (mine is part of the engine... md17d.. ) and injectors and have had to use all of them except for the belts and the hoses.

Re the alternator... mine is a battery sensed Bosch with an external regulator that is mounted on the back of the alt... I have had to replace the reg a couple of times.

We carry a spare house water pump. Our water tanks are low and the pump is required to get water out. I have an identical pump ready to swap and plug in. I was a hero on first cruise when primary went out, and I had replacement in a fee minutes later.

A broken key in the ignition lock can really wreck your day. How about a spare lock:

https://www.asap-supplies.com/key-st...o-page-search1

Spare 2 blade fixed prop secondhand from e bay or Foulkes Boatyard Take a torch because they have an ISO container full of props to search through.

20L Jerry can of diesel which can be rigged with spare fuel lines to alleviate the tank and existing lines.

Unless you have a dripless stuffing box don't forget some extra shaft packing.

re: Engine Spares For Remote Cruising

Consider two spare belts, not just one. I had an issue a few years back where the main belt on an engine broke, annoying but it happens. I had a spare, popped it on and all seemed well then two days later that one broke. Turns out a bit of corrosion on one of the wheels worked it's way into a nasty little burr that was eating belts like crazy. Thankfully I wasn't too far from a store to pick one up, I would not have wanted to be in that position in the middle of nowhere.

All depends upon where you are cruising. I’ve been told epoxy and glass is difficult to obtain in Greenland. Some sort of back-up plotter If not just a smart phone, but that also means duplicate charts. Before iPhone I bought a spare plotter head, and because of heavy fog and suspect charts, a spare radome. Some of this is silly here in the South.

LOTS of rode, maybe some floating, easier to get ashore. Anchors. AP.

Some would opt for rigging wire, turnbuckles, or dynemma and staylocks.

This can lead to raising your waterline and other madness.

Dockhead,

While not specifically addressing your cruise, this has a pretty good list and might include something not on your radar, yet:

Don't know much about preparing for a trip like that (definitely jealous though) but here's a list of engine parts that have broken on me before that aren't on your list:

Tranny rear seal
Alternator
Lift pump
Exhaust elbow and other exhaust knickknacks
Starter solenoid/relay

Spares For Remote Cruising

I’d start with a Yanmar extended spare parts kit, comes in a nice plastic large box to keep everything in, and has things like spray paint in the right color, and impellers, O-rings, a spare injector etc., engine manual, lots of stuff.
But I would nix the every hose thing and carry a roll of rescue tape and in the unlikely event you lose a hose, tape it and leave the rad cap loose so it doesn’t build pressure.
I’d add a gallon of coolant and transmission fluid and a spare starter, and stupid as this sounds, a good set of jumper cables, and a remote starter switch, keeps you from having to weld a screwdriver to the solenoid
I carry a dozen 30 micron Racor and a dozen Yanmar spin on filters. Should take years to use them, unless I get a load of bad fuel, then I may go through them fast.
I bought them off of EBay for pennies on the dollar, and they are for certain real Racor filters, not knockoffs.

Don’t forget the generator too. And ideally overhaul kits for the pumps. I carry spares, but the idea is to R&R, then overhaul.
