Part 2 - Columbia 29 refit, in the Rocky Mountains

Hello Everyone,

Just got back from the South Pacific and we both enjoyed it so much. What a beautiful place and such great water to dive, swim and snorkel in! It was inspiring for the boat refit, to think we can have a vehicle to travel the water and enjoy more adventures.

After months of working on it and not much time near the water it becomes less exciting. I think I would suggest to anyone doing a refit to make sure you keep enjoying sailing and the water to keep the enthusiasm up.

Also gave us some great ideas of what we want to do and more on how we want to use the boat. On the refit side of things, we actually found a highly recommended local carpenter to come up to our place and do the work rather than having to trailer the boat hundreds of miles away.

I will be trying to track down some Honduran mahogany soon and we already have plenty of teak I believe. So hopefully he can knock out some killer storage for us within the boat to make her more useable with all four of us.

Kids are 1 and 5 right now. Hoping to do at least a week at a time maybe more. But the big idea is to drop the kids at grandmas and for the wife and I to go for a week on the boat and just enjoy some quiet time.

puget sound is a good starting place .

Here are a few photos from the South Pacific. Amazing water, great people and we were wishing we had our little boat done and down there to explore the other islands in the chain with. Great motivation.

Glad you enjoyed your trip.

My idea of a refit is to paint the bottom then do as little as possible to make the boat seaworthy then launch and sail within say 15 miles of the coastline after you test the boat.

I bought my boat in June of 2011 and have been sailing it almost continuously since. It's in the yard now for more refitting. Interior/exterior paint, bottom job, new outboard bracket, new dodger, new mainsail cover.....

Maybe you can buy a small boat to sail new where you live while the refit on your "big" boat continues

A lightning has all the sails (main, jib, spinnaker) and can be raced all around the USA. Or just sail it on your local lake ….
