Very nice workmanship throughout. It seems like a good price.
Not your normal production sailboat, for sure, but you could go anywhere with her, I think.

This is near me, and ever so tempting at that price. I’m trying to decide whether to go north up to Alaska next year or to get a boat in Florida near my mother and do cruise the east coast… I have a Herreshoff 12 1/2 on a small mooring in Tomales Bay that I’ll sell to finance the beer and fishing gear…

I agree with ramron67, that's a beauty!

I'm not a huge fan of a bridgedeck with mainsheet traveller in the cockpit (but I know it probably sails better like that).
Lovely interior. All the canvas, sails and upholstery look in good shape. Nice dodger.

The engine is original and there is no windlass, but apart from that it's ideal.

The listing says the engine has been rebuilt. Are we sure this isn't a CAL35 MKII? I owned one and this looks identical.

The ports match a Cal39 mk III, not the 35 or 39 mk II

I see it now. I really liked my 35MKII. It had the same headliner issues as this boat. We also had issues with the massive spade rudder and developed a hull leak at the bearing! Still, an awesome boat and id buy it back in a heartbeat.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

Anyone need a ketch? Currently located near PDX on the river.

'77 32ft Dreadnaught

Just went to see this on the basis of a very exhaustive and honest write-up, and it was just as advertised. Obviously an older boat with visible things that will need to be addressed (as in the advert) but also a very well maintained and cared for cruiser.

Not for us because it's clearly optimized for 2 (small cockpit, no V-berth, somewhat awkward head placement) (we have 2+2), otherwise I'd be hard-pressed to pass it up.

I think $9K (if that) and you still have to haul it somewhere for a 2-10 year refit.

There are a lot of boats of this vintage in this condition. Original engine, old electronics, woodwork a mess inside and out, wiring, rigging, upholstery and canvas will be questionable to say the least.

Also, this is not a popular size/style of boat these days. They are nice boats if they have been restored, but that required a chain of meticulous former owners - or some saps to spend years of their life restoring her...been there, done that.

The present owners of the boat (or the field) have a problem. Don't make it your problem. (I think it has scrap value only).

Is an 39MKII with very nice upgrades, just like the one I used to own
