Need alternative to Pirate flag

Pirates were, and still are, criminals who robbed, raped, and killed their victims.

Most people that I've talked to who fly skull and crossbones flags today think it is a joke, and are declaring themselves to be people who flout the rules and have fun.

I even had a women tell me that other women liked to play "pirate" because it gave them an excuse to wear bustier.

But I think that makes light of and glorifies a pretty terrible group of people.

Would we think it was so harmless if people fly an Al Qaida flag, or an ISIS flag. Pretty funny, huh?

I don't ever remember flying a skull/crossbones. I like to fly flages that mean something. Right now I have an "Old Guys Rule" flag with a Guy anf his dog sitting on a dock - fits me and how i feel . However I did fly a Conch Republic flag, still have it and it still means the same. Matter of fact with todays politics it is probably going back up the mast.

This flag represents evil people in the same manner that the Union Jack represents colonial imperialism—200 years ago, maybe. Its meaning has long since changed, like many symbols tend to do.

I served in a military unit, and flew with another, that used the Jolly Roger as its official insignia. Navy JAG commands run it up the flag pole on base when trial defense counsel wins a case. It is very commonly used in the submarine service, especially the Royal Navy. I could go on and on. Its meaning has long since changed from representing piracy to representing rebellion against the system and victory at sea.

Claiming that this flag is the same as the Nazi flag is beyond ridiculous.

Stop looking to be offended and go fly a dayshape, or whatever it is wet blankets do for fun.

An ISIS, Islamic Caliphate, or Cuban/Nicaragua flag is much more likely.

Flying the skull & crossbones is a nod to the dawning age of sail, and exploration. Nothing more.

the middle one is the eureka stockade flag which very roughly equates to the us confederate flag, without the slavery connotations

the boxing kangaroo should need no explanation to a us audience but for others, it became a symbol used by Australia II when winning the R.Y.S. £100 Cup

I'd rather see the pirate flag, since it is kind of a mythical thing, than anything related to the Sea Shepherd lot of fools.

I'm toying with the idea of flying a UN flag. I just think the world has become too small, too interconnected and faces too many problems that need to be addressed on a planetary scale. Humans have evolved from the paleolithic bands of hunter-gathers, through the neolithic stage of settled villages, through the rise of the city state during the classical period, and now the modern nation state. I don't think we can afford to continue much longer with the parochial nationalism of the modern era if we are to inhabit a livable planet. We will either find the creativity to evolve or risk perishing as a species. Perhaps we will need some interim step of regional organizations before we can move to a planetary social organization, which is probably some centuries hence even if we manage to survive the current Anthropocene.

I think some people just need to get a life, worry about something important, life changing, take at risk kids out on your boat, there are several programs out there.
No one is flying the flag with anything other than thinking about having a good time.

Exactly why we go to the other end of the anchorage. Three of these six that rafted up 30' from us were flying pirate flags.

If you won't fly the skull and crossbones you had better steer clear of most national flags of traditionally seafaring nations. Especially if you disdain, rape, pillage, piracy, slaving, and genocide. England's Sir Francis Drake is a national hero who defeated the Spanish Armada, to the Spaniards he was a pirate who robbed their gold shipments, like John Hawkins he was a pioneer of the North Atlantic slave trade and favourite of his Queen. How about a rainbow flag, how could that upset anyone?
