Re: Need alternative to Pirate flag

We always held that flying a Skull & Crossbones/Jolly Roger flag was acceptable provided that the yachts crew included members with a physical age younger than ten or eleven years old.

Re: Need alternative to Pirate flag

Peace ☮️ sign. IIRC there are inexpensive examples available at Amazon.

Actually, just go to Amazon and search ‘flag’ and you can look through all sorts of choices

We fly the saffron swallowtail of Kanhoji, who chased the British out of his patch of Indian water for quite a long time. Go the Marathas!

Peeps need to chill - getting bothered is what cruising is not about.

If Disney, the most woke company in existence, is ok with Pirate flags, they are not offensive.

Re: Need alternative to Pirate flag

So much misinformation, even when it’s freely available on Wikipedia.

Symbolism changes over time. It’s neither a tribute to the past, nor typically a predictor of the evils of today’s users. As mentioned, if so the British flag would be banned, as it represented an incredible level of oppression, and the worlds most accomplished drug pusher, queen victoria.

And FWIW the Wehrmacht didn’t willingly adopt the swastika, it was pushed on them. Even into the late 1930s they pushed back as much as possible; case in point the WaA retained the Weimar eagle till about 1936 or 1937.

In any event, MYOB. Don’t like a flag, don’t fly it.

Re: Need alternative to Pirate flag

Yes, pirates were nothing but criminals and it puzzles me that today, many people romanticize them. Boaters fly pirate flags and many towns and cities with any tourist trade have "pirate ships" that take tourists out for a fake pirate boarding.

It make me wonder if, in two hundred years, people will be celebrating carjackers.

I have a friend who thinks he is a pirate, flies a pirate flag on his boat and sometimes even wears a pirate costume and hat. In my opinion, he is old enough to know better, but I'm not going to say anything.

You don't have to fly any flag on your boat. Personally, I fly an American flag.

A "Trump" flag would be an option.

Re: Need alternative to Pirate flag

While under the boat one day cleaning the prop, with two dive flags up, a twin engine tee top came right along side to ask the manatee crew “which way is home”. Probably happens to every diver .
We don’t fly flags. No matter which one you choose, somebody gets angry.
The manatee crew designed an ORCA flag. You guessed it. Orcas eating a sailboat. I told them that if they flew it, no more pizza and beer.
Happy trails to you.

... context. The Jolly Roger and pirate imagery have been so often used in benign, fanciful ways that it seems pretty harmless now, to me, and its darker side has apparently not been invoked by fringe groups or ideologies. Others will have a different view.

On the other hand, Nazi regalia and symbols have an unmistakeable association, and this association has been deliberately embraced by some bad actors and dangerous ideologies... ditto for the US Confederate flag. So I do agree that some symbols are hurtful and have no place in respectful society.

Re: Need alternative to Pirate flag

Where I sail, most pirate flags are on small power boats operated by the same clueless people who speed through manatee zones, crash into sandbars because they don't read charts and anchor off the stern into a chop.

Really, imagining you are a pirate on a 19-foot Bayliner? Or a Catalina 25 or a half-million-dollar catamaran with three en suite staterooms and air conditioning?

Ho ho ho! Someone is not in touch with reality. Have another slug of your $40-a-bottle imported rum.

Re: Need alternative to Pirate flag

Experience has taught me that it is wise to go to the opposite end of an anchorage from anyone flying the pirate flag.

Heard of "Grand Theft Auto"?

As I mentioned, many pirates were essentially mercenaries, and their raiding was sanctioned by government (letters of marque). And governments still use mercenaries and private military contractors today, and those forces aren't paragons of virtue either... [/derail]

... and if you're on your first charter in the BVIs, you usually end up at Leverick Bay at some point, and Michael Bean's pirate show. For which some even dress the part. Silly but harmless.

Flags with strong ideological/political associations are seldom positive, outside of the political arena.
