Re: Problem with downloading V5

Hi Hubert and Transmitterdan,

Experimenting with the unstable version sounds interesting but right now, I need a stable version as this is one of the last things to fix and keeping me in port!

I believe I have all the latest drivers …

What else can I do to version 5 to stop OpenCPN from crashing and keep OpenGL on so I can use the MBtiles?

Secondly, if there’s nothing more that can be done, do you suggest I return to build 4.8.4? Or will version 5 be stable for everything with OpenGL=0?

Thank you again for help!!

Re: Problem with downloading V5

From the point of development it would be interesting to see you testing the unstable version in order to have more hints where the crashes on some Intel Graphic platforms origin. And if some of the patches in 5.x are making a difference.

You should install in parallel to preserve the rest of your settings, tracks etc.

If we can't find a graphics driver that does not crashes for your system, then indeed 4.8.8 would be the only stable solution.
I would keep that version as well in parallel.

Re: Problem with downloading V5

Hi Hubert,

It sounds like I should install 4.8.8.
Can you send me a link for that installation?

If you have a graphics driver for my system, that'd be really great!! Fingers crossed!

I can attempt to run the unstable version in parallel. I'm not a techie, but I'd certainly like to help with a program from which I've benefited. And, as the captain of my own boat with crew on-board, I'll likely be stretched thin. I've seen instructions for running two versions of OpenCPN in the manual. I'm assuming I just follow those. Correct?

Re: Problem with downloading V5

Serafin,

During installation it will give you the choice to install in parallel. Use that option. Then you can run either the existing version or the new unstable version but not both at the same time.

We would like to know if unstable version works with your video system.

Transmitterdan, I'll try.

Dave, Thank you for the link.

ALL: Is v5 stable with GLOpen=0??
If yes, why downgrade to v4.8.8?

Thank you,

Re: Problem with downloading V5

Hi,

I need a recommendation on how to proceed with v4.8.8 to ensure it operates fully in stable condition.

It appears there was an error uninstalling v5

Output folder: C:\Program Files Linda\OpenCPN
Execute: "C:\Program Files Linda\OpenCPN\Uninstall 5.0.0+9065270.exe" /S /type=1 _?=C:\Program Files Linda\OpenCPN
Error on uninstalling
Delete file: C:\Program Files Linda\OpenCPN\Uninstall 5.0.0+9065270.exe
Output folder: C:\Program Files Linda\OpenCPN
Create folder: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\OpenCPN
Create shortcut: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\OpenCPN\OpenCPN 5.0.0+9065270.lnk
Create shortcut: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\OpenCPN\OpenCPN 5.0.0+9065270 - No OpenGL.lnk
Create folder: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\OpenCPN\Uninstall
Create shortcut: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\OpenCPN\Uninstall\Uninstall OpenCPN 5.0.0+9065270.lnk
Create shortcut: C:\Users\Public\Desktop\OpenCPN 5.0.0+9065270.lnk

it continues ... do you need more data?

Thank you

Re: Problem with downloading V5

Serafin,

Does 4.8.8 work for you? Typically an uninstall error is not a serious problem. I would be looking for an error during install. Did you see any message about install error?

Hi Transmitterdan,

Thanks very much for your speedy reply.

I'm testing v4.8.8 right now. I know for certain that one anchorage I had saved is not there. And then I saw the error message in the install log.

I searched for "error" in the install log and these are all the entries that surfaced:

Hi, I've been testing
v4.8.8 seems to be working ok!!
Do you think those error messages will cause a problem later?
Thank you,
Linda

Re: Problem with downloading V5

No, most probably not.

You can run several installs in parallel as well.
What we are doing all the time when new versions are being tested or one wants to compare with older versions (regressions).

Some directories will not be deleted by the uninstaller and Windows then notifies. Just erasing them manually creates no issue neither.
In "programs". Don't kill the ProgramData entry of OCPN or you will loose your settings and information like tracks and waypoints..

Re: Problem with downloading V5

ok, bcn, thank you.
What is the name of the file that contains the settings and information like tracks and waypoints?

I've emailed Acer asking for an updated driver.

In the meantime, I'll plan to run v4.8.8 (stable) with kap charts.
Parallel v5 (so I can see the better images using the MBtiles for a short time expecting it will crash).
And parallel of the beta model requested above (to see if the graphics will work on my laptop).

I will hope for resolution of the graphics problem so I can upgrade later. But, as the upgrades will be installed as 'parallel' what will I need to do to upgrade in the future? Uninstall v4.8.8 and reinstall or ???

Thank you,
Linda

Re: Problem with downloading V5

Hi ,

Well, perhaps there is a problem with the uninstall and v4.8.8 is not working as smoothly as expected.

I had practiced with changing some of the settings related to clutter. I can only describe the situation because V5 manual is imbedded in the program and I no longer am running v5.

I changed some of the settings to show some waypoints at a resolution; for example, only below 1: 3.2mm scale.

In running v4.8.8 now, some of my tracks are disappearing when I zoom and dezoom. The tracks appear and disappear. If I move the mouse over the track, it sometimes disappears and doesn't reappear at all at that scale.

This is ultra annoying. I need the track to stay visible at all resolutions of the screen.

Part of my trip is to go back the way I came so I'll want to use my old track. I don't want the track appearing and disappearing! How do I stop this seemingly random disappearance of my tracks?

I've tried removing the track and importing it again, but the problem doesn't stop.

What is this decluttering function called because when I try to find it in v4.8.6 manual, I cannot.

Thank you,
Linda

Re: Problem with downloading V5

Hi again,

More testing here. And additional information...

In v4.8.8, if I edit the ini file change OpenGL=1 to OpenGL=0, the tracks behave normally.

With OpenGL=1, the tracks misbehave as described above.

I hope you can help with this problem.

I had planned to install the parallel version today but with this new hiccup, I'll wait for further instructions.

Thank you!

Re: Problem with downloading V5

Hi Linda,

It’s pretty clear you have a video driver problem. Can you go back to OpenGL=1 and then select software OpenGL in the advanced options?
