Re: OpenCPN Version 5.7.1 Beta Test #3

It was always closing when I tried to openning. I have never been able to make it to work properly. I had to remove the program and rebuild with a completely new installation. I work all day to re-install the charts. The version OpenCPN 5.7.1+e05722f work correctly with the exception of the drying depth indication.
I never had that sort of problem before. As I threw away all about it, I will not re-install that version. Thanks for the reply, maybe will wait for a stable version in the future; hoping that it will be correct.

It will very likely not be "correct" for you, as you so far seem to be the only one experiencing this issue and we have no information that we could use to solve it...

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.7.1 Beta Test #3

Some observation from Beta 3.

1. On Linux, nice to see support for different SocketCAN interfaces (eg. can0, can1 etc.). However it seems that you cannot change the socketCAN interface for an existing connection. A number of very weird graphics anomalies, as shown in the screen captures when removing and adding a connection without closing the settings dialog. Note that these may be not be representable as my Linux test platform is Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, running under Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL).

2. From a Usability perspective, if one selects a serial connection, and then NMEA2000 protocol, all of the NMEA 183 settings (Control Checksum, Output on the Port for Autopilot Input, Input/Ouyput filtering) should be greyed out/disabled. Selecting any of the NMEA183 options for a NMEA2000 port, after selecting OK or Cancel disables that port. If you are going to enable filtering for NMEA 2000, you should display a list of Parameter Group Numbers (PGN's).

3. Priority settings. I don't think it makes any sense to differentiate position data (PGN 129025 and 129029) from the same CAN Bus address. For example if PGN 129025 and 129029 are received from CAN Bus address 4, it is the same GPS device. The only difference is the rate of transmission and for PGN 129029, some extraneous data, the latitude & longitude values are the same.

4. Invalid Latitude & longitude values. Discovered purely by accident, when I was feeding an existing Actisense EBL log file to the serial port assigned to the NMEA 2000 serial device. I mistakenly transferred it as text rather than binary, so presumably the data stream was corrupted (misinterpreted CR/LF characters). Nonetheless, given the data format of the Actisense the PGN's were parsed with albeit invalid values. Refer to the obviously incorrect lat & long values in the screen shot. This is probably an edge case (who in their right mind will pass a corrupted data stream!), so maybe safe to ignore. However there may also be some latent errors in the Actisense parsing routine (accepting a STX character without a preceding ETX).

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.7.1 Beta Test #3

S57 Display & Scaling Problems.

Testing some other stuff and manually loaded NOAA S57 charts.

Please refer to attached screenshots. At low zoom levels it appears that the large scale chart areas blank out areas on the small scale charts. Also details on the large scale charts only appear at larger zoom levels.

Occurs on both a Windows 10 & Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (running under WSL)

Using wxWidgets v3.2 for the macOS version of OpenCPN is not a good idea.It has several bugs and one of them was just closed yesterday. And there are still symbolic links in the Frameworks folder of the bundle which is absolutely wrong.

I'm looking at Seattle, same charts. Can you be more specific about your observations? Maybe a marked up screen shot? Not at all sure what I should be looking for. They look fine to me...

Also, for reference, let's disable cm93, and see if there is any difference.

Thanks
Dave

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.7.1 Beta Test #3

FWIW I see the drying heights issue on NZ S63 charts too. S63 plugin from the master plugin catalogue (1.19.00).

Windows 11.

Moo...
Drying heights on S63 will not be corrected until next Beta.
Thanks for the report.

Moo...
You may verify the drying height correction by installing a preview of the next Beta.

Well, I was too happy to see it works, it is crashing after opening the second time. Remove the pdf and unzip the log file.

CM93 ed.2 not working. Unfortunately, but depth on shoals are Ok.
After the crash one must not restart it in safe mode, it will crash again.

After unchecking opengl, it is working fairly well. Thanks for reply and for the update. Including CM 93.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.7.1 Beta Test #3

Here beta 3 tested on:

Linux Mint AMD64 with kernel 6.01

RPI4 flatpak on Debian Bullseye
RPI 4 flatpak on Ubuntu Kinetic
RPI 4 flatpak on Fedora Rawhide
Raspberry CM4 on IO board with flatpak on Fedora Rawhide

All this systems run well including the Oesenc Dongle and the Oesenc Charts and CM8. charts.

Bram

Great progress has been made. Thanks.
