No Rudder angle data

Hi folks,
thanks in advance. I have NMEA 2000 back bone with bandg rudder angle sensor.
It is seen clearly on the TRITON display autiopilot however using the Actisense NGT from the back bone to Open CPN (otherwise working great), it is the only information that isn't displayed on opencpn that was displayed on my now dead chartplotter. Any help really appreciated.

Re: No Rudder angle data

Carry on...
Could you find out how the Acticense is translating the rudder angle from N2k to NMEA0183. You may use the NMEA Debug window to find out?
OCPN are using the following messages for rudder angle data:
xxXDR Name = "RUDDER"
or
xxRSA (Like: $IIRSA,-22,A,,*2C)
or if using SignalK:
steering.rudderAngle

Re: No Rudder angle data

Is it an NGT or a NGW you have. The NGT does not translate the data into nmea0183 ( there is a plug-in for openCPN to use the NGT.

Re: No Rudder angle data

Thanks Folks, It is in fact an NGW from Actisense. I am preparing the data for submission and review. Thanks to you all....all of you...you unsung heroes.

Re: No Rudder angle data

I have no experience with the Actisense NGW, however the obvious question is "have you configured the NGW to convert the NMEA 2000 PGN 127245 to its corresponding NMEA 183 RSA sentence?"

From a quick perusal of the manual, this seems like an option in the Actisense Toolkit.

The second question is have you configured the B&G rudder sensor instance number to something other than its default ? Ordinarily instance 0 should refer to either the main rudder, or in the case of a dual rudder system, the starboard rudder and instance 1, the port rudder.

This may impact the conversion of the NMEA 2000 message to the NMEA 183 RSA sentence and the resulting display of the rudder angle in the dashboard.

For example if the instance has been configured to 1, the resulting RSA sentence will be something like:
Code:
$IIRSA,,A,10.0,V*48
which to the best of my knowledge will not be displayed by the dashboard as I believe it only displays the main rudder.

Correct! O Dashboard does only use the starboard/single rudder value.

Re: No Rudder angle data

Thanks again folks. Should it not be at the default setting as I am in a Neel 51 trimaran, only has one rudder anyway.
Thanks

Re: No Rudder angle data

None of us reading this thread know how your system was configured when your system was installed or commissioned.

Best way for you to check is from your Triton display, presumably from the Settings->Device List option.

And as stated previously, you need to also ensure your Actisense NGW is configured to convert PGN 127245. If you are not receiving RSA sentences in the OpenCPN NMEA debug window, then that needs to be resolved first.

Re: No Rudder angle data

Hi again folks, as always Mucho Gracias.

So I have loaded NMEA viewer, the option for the translation is ticked for the rudder information. I have loaded this from the hardware however when I go to the NMEA viewer app by actisense or inside debug window of Opencpn the RSA does not appear. see attached for further info.

Furthermore I am on the latest firmware from actisense for the NGW.

Unhappy Re: No Rudder angle data

I have similar behaviour about NMEA RSA sentence in OpenCPN.

I've Raymarine autopilot connected to COM6.

At this time plotter Furuno - GP1971F switched off, and seen in the attached picture "Furuno_off0" even opencpn receiving the sentence $APRSA correctly, or I guess it is, there is no indication of the rudder angle in the program.

without any intervention I switch on plotter and I get the rudder angle (picture "Furuno_on0")
switch off the plotter and rudder angle disappeared.

I've applied in the screenshots filter for the COM6 for better view (Autopilot sentences in the OpenCPN)

rest of the data are received in COM5 via Multiplexor Shipmodul MiniPlex-3E-N2K (mixing and converting NMEA 0183 & N2K)

Have you written the config to the hardware and re-read the config to ensure that it has been applied.

What RFU (rudder sensor) do you have?

It could be that your pilot is set for virtual rudder feedback?

Re: No Rudder angle data

OCPN Dashboard logic follows the NMEA0183 standard. See for example here.

On my screen I cant see if the received RSA in your shot is correct. Pls check.

during recording I've altered the helm position to see how is changing also in the value of the sentence.
as you can see all then received and processed as green but no helm angle displayed.

if I switch on the plotter Furuno the helm angle is displayed

Re: No Rudder angle data

Your RSA is not according to NMA0183 standard.

$--RSA,x.x,A,x.x,A*hh<CR><LF>
Two fields are omitted. (Even if port rudder is not present the (empty) fields should be there)

These are working:
(COM6) $IIRSA,-34,A,,*2B<0x0D><0x0A>
(COM6) $IIRSA,-36,A,,*29<0x0D><0x0A>
(COM6) $IIRSA,-38,A,,*27<0x0D><0x0A>

I've dived in the Autopilot manual and it says that transmission is based on standard NMEA 0183 v2.3, maybe that version could omit the non existing 2nd rudder in the sentence.

I've already checked when plotter is on and I filtered for another sentence RSA (previously I didn't found another different from another COM) also I'd checked for XDR sentence with RUDDER and found nothing.
I'll go double checking in NMEA sentences for any difference, otherwise I'll became crazy why yes when plotter is on and why not when is off?
