Nobody take care about the entries in github also.
So why?

Yes, I know OpenCPN is a good example to learn programming again.
And several people have done so.
But it is not an example to give a user friendly program to the public.
And exactly how many lines of code have you submitted to github as a way of improving the program?

None and I never ever will do. You get it?

@CarCode

I'm very surprised about the attitude you show here. You are complaining about a free software developped by many very knowledgeable people who put a lot of unpaid work into it.
In general this piece of software is very much on a par with expensive commercial software, yet it is free and tons of people worldwide use it successfully for navigation with very few issues.

I do not think that someone like you who is not willing to contribute should show the attitude you display here towards the developers.
Consider working on that to the benefit of all of us.
Alternativly buy commercial which gives you any right to complain in your "style" .

Thank you to the whole team for creating such a great piece of software!

Thank you for saying this.

I have been using a variety of commercial software for at least fifteen years and OpenCPN for five. OpenCPN is a fantastic "product" and the developers should be applauded, not criticized. It is superior to many high priced commercial products that I have used in the past.

You are new to OpenCPN and don't kow the time when there was no version for macOS. You might also don't know strange and crazy decisions like fogging the chart view when zooming in to much despite the already existing warning. There have been some other decisions as well to scramble a chart view. Most of these bad decisions have been removed fortunately, however at that time I decided not to follow the main development and to make my own version only for me. Several of my critics in the past years lead to some improvements. Many years ago e.g. I recommend to use the latest version of wxWidgets because the formerly still used version 2.8 does not work with macOS. This was done some month ago now. So I still make my critics to push for a better OpenCPN. Might be some day it will even as good as a commercial product. Actually it is still not.

If we put all our energy together, maybe we will get better. No unnecessary critisims should be permitted, as this piece of work is fantastic from those who volunteer to accomplish it. Thank you so much.

Re: OpenCPN General

I hate to disagree.

1)
I am using OpenCPN since version 2 if not earlier.
2)
I have no issue with the new interface.
3)
I love some of the new features like the split screen.
4)
I see nothing which is really so unintuitive to me that I would consider it a hindrance.
5)
I love the new support to use MBtiles
6)
I am not using any Apple stuff and refer to the Windows 10 version of OpenCPN 5. Nothing is perfect but for a free piece of software it is simply very very good.
7)
I have nothing against fair and productive critique.
But the way you communicate this towards the team is just unbearable.
If you have real issues help them to make it better for everyone, but don't critisize and than do nothing to help.

Ah, Dan - I'm straying into areas that Luddites fear to tread!! My device manager doesn't make it obvious, but if its the Display Adapter we're talking about, its from the Intel (R) HD family and the driver is, according to windows, the best there is!

For others following this particular sub thread - I apologise if I've inadvertently started a bit of a ****-storm. Please let us not degenerate into a Guns or anchors or Cat versus mono thread.

My position is quite simply that I'm a huge fan of Open CPN and full of admiration for the developers. I've been using it since the very beginning! The fact that its fallen apart for me personally from Ver 4 onwards is most likely my own, or my hardware's fault! I WILL make it work - but on my other 2 machines! Tony

Tony,

in O5 the log tells a lot about the Graphics (Intel etc.).
Take a look and publish if you like so.

The rest: have fun and don't worry about trolls..

Tony,

You have started no storm.

As Hubert mentioned we would like to see the first 100 lines of opencpn.log from running V5.0. It will tell the Intel info that helps know the problem. My suspicion is your Intel driver is not working correctly. This is actually a common problem.

Windows update mainly only cares about security issues. There can be a newer driver from Intel but Windows update will not notice that.

Re: OpenCPN General

Tony,

You are in good hands with BCN and TDan, and if you can provide those files it would really help, but I wanted to suggest that Intel has a driver tool that will inspect your computer and update any out of date drivers. I have used that in the past on my old Dell Inspiron XPS 15 which has Intel HD Graphics 3100 I believe. That helped to solve my opengl issues after some faulty Windows 10 updates.

BCN, Transmitter Dan and RG Leason - Thanks guys and sorry for the delay - I had to take a boat down islands (South of 12 degN for hurricane season).

Just got home and will publish the log tomorrow!

It just keeps on loading charts - you probably have enough here to look at?

As for the greyed out squares - I got a screenshot but can't get it into this message. Basically on the world chart it has 2 large areas, they both cover from 40degN to the Equator and the Westernmost one from 159degE to 160W, the other from 120W to 80W Pretty large areas, covering important things like the Panama Canal... Cheers, Tony

Re: OpenCPN General

I think you need a new Intel video driver. Windows does not always automatically do that for you.

You can go to Intel.com and get their automatic driver update tool. It should analyze your system and find the right driver.

If you have a Dell computer you can get all your drivers updated with their automatic support tool.
