Modernizing a Prout Elite 37ft

That's a strange looking rig - almost looks as though the mast is well aft of the centre of the boat.

Wouldn't the mast normally be stepped about where the inner forestay/staysail tack is located..??

the idea is that the boat sails pretty much on its head sail only.

here is one that sailed by yesterday,this is the older snowgoose,same lenth,shorter mast ,slightly narrower hulls and a bit less beam.

If I'm right the Prouts don't have deep boards, only mini-keels..???

So the action of thrust that might upset the helm pressure in a boat with foils way aft isn't an issue..??

It looks as though foils would need to be roughly in line with the mast step, and I would have thought that would make for uncertain handling or other wird behaviour, hence why I was curious....

Seems an unusual set-upo, given that every other cat or tri design has the mast stepped forward of the centre and boards or foils slightly aft of the mast step.

Even Farriers and similar modern boats with big daggerboards have them angled back from forrard of the mast so that most of the area is behind the line of the mast.

Am I thinking correctly or is there some vital bit of info I'm missing?

they have mini keels about 40cm deep and skegs on the rudders,no boards.

these are not performance cats........more like the "landrover" of the sea !

Some of the mainline Cat producers have moved the mast rearwards.... Lagoon I believe.

The antipathy towards Prout that I have, has always been based on interior design and not the safety or seaworthiness of the craft. It is a most solid and steady workhorse with moments of speed surprise in the right conditions.

Its a fine vessel.

@ Atoll Know you have boocoo ngineerin exp, but how much xtra weight did u add in to the design with oh....insulation, xtra glasssy **** and stuff? How did that fx your display-ce-mint?

I'm watching the weight very carefully!
this is one of the bonus's of building the boat in the water.

at the moment with the engine and stern drive in and the aft cabins about 70% finished she is floating about 9 inches above her designed waterline in the stern,and a good 14 inches in the bow.

not sure if I will be adding extra weight as prout used fairly heavy fiberglass mouldings throughout the model I have on their build.

on the factory built boats every thing was very heavily laminated in with csm and polyester resin,adding a lot of weight,also their joinery uses a lot of hardwood trim,and fairly thick plywood.

I am hoping to reduce that weight by a fair amount using epoxy and lighter materials,ie using 6mm where they have used 9mm,and 9 mm where they have used 12mm.

I will have a better idea once the floors are in in the bow,and cabinetry done then re-asses ,and possibly use neoprean and vinyl for the ceilings or airex white board.

Don't know if it's available where you are, but here in Aus we can get hold of balsa cored plywood. It's good, light stuff for interior work.

had a look at it ,what is available starts at 12 mm @4.15kg/m2

the only suppliers I can find are gurit for balsaflex,and moralt for laminaboard.

2.2mm gabon faced,they dont actually advertise a price so suspect it is horrendously expensive!

The stuff we used was pretty reasonably priced, like about $50 a sheet. But again that was here in Aus.

No. To a centrally located rig. Whilst the Prouts have aftmast rigs the Lagoon is a centrally located rig.
