Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

Thanks gabe1111, i dont think that the hull/keel joint is any worse than any other H38, and its good to know that there is damage to the skeg. Someone has bid $70. Hopefully they dont intend to scrap it. i appreciate the effort and the photos.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

CORRECTION:
Earlier I posted a long post with photos about SVERIGE a Bristol 40 for sale. That boat is in CHARLESTON SC and NOT in St. Johns USVI.

The original sale post on Facebook only said "St. Johns" so I asked the owner of the boat to clarify. Here is his response today:
"Charleston South Carolina, St John's Yacht Harbor Marina E dock, slip E 33"

Westerly Renown 35 Ketch 1972

Asking Price = $3,000

Location : South Florida (Miami. Craigs list) Port Salerno

Westerly Renown 35' ketch
______________

Steady's CAUTION about Photos in these posts:

As with most of the posts I make in this thread, I will post several photos to ILLUSTRATE what this model of boat looks like in the typical interior, exterior, and plan views. This is to help CF members be introduced to a model of boat.

These photos may be from a MIX of boats and are NOT necessarily from any sale listing links I post. Use the photos to get an idea of what this model of boat may look like, then do your own research, then look very carefully at any listed boats and compare condition.

Condition, more than age or price, is most important when buying ANY boat.
__________

Steady's NOTES 2:

I am posting this boat for these reasons:

1. It was brought to my attention by another CF Member who is not in the market to buy now but suggested this boat may fit this thread.

2. It is rare to see a Westerly boat on the USA used boat market. Because one is currently listed for sale in the USA, I am using it to represent the lowest "Asking Price" I have found in the USA. Consider that as you will.

3. It may suit someone who is on a very small budget.

4. The boat is listed at a very low price. This may be because of poor condition or other reasons. IF the "new 30 hp engine with low hours" is in good condition, it may be worth looking at as a possible "project boat"...or not.
_______________

As with any boat in this thread, CAVEAT EMPTOR!
I make no recommendation about the quality or condition of this boat. I have NO connection to the seller or boat. Buyer Beware.
______________

From the sale listing:
"Westerly Renown ketch for sale, needs main sail patched and pulpit remounted. slip may be transferred in stuart 200 a month. New yanmar 30hp engine with low hours, can motor away with just batterys, v berth, aft cabin, VHF, Solar panel, rigging in good condition, composting head, interior needs alot of cleaning. very nice boat with classic lines that needs a happy home. will consider any reasonable offer. images taken with the pulpit on."

I was just notified by a CF Member that the Westerly Renown 35 that I linked up above has now SOLD.

IF a CF member bought that boat or ANY boat from this thread, I hope you will post some photos and tell us about the condition and your great deal.

Van de Stadt / Royal Huisman 39 Sloop 1971 ALUMINUM

NEW Listing today! NOV 3, 2016

Asking Price =$24,500
Location = Great Lakes
________________

Steady's NOTES:

1. This is an ALUMINUM boat, built by one of the very best Dutch boat building yards. This is important. I like that.

2. This boat was built by Dutch shipwrights. Take a look at the interior. I like it.

3. This boat has raced and done well. It has proven fast. I like that.

4. This boat has almost new Volvo 30HP Turbo Engine and numerous updated gear including self tailing winches. It is a Volvo Turbo, but it is practically new. I like that.

5. It has a distinctive appearance. I like it.

6. It has teak decks. I like teak decks. Yes, teak decks can be a problem IF they cause leaks in plywood decks beneath them. But, is that going to be a problem on THIS boat? I happen to like teak decks for good footholding grippiness. And if I were sailing this boat in northern areas (PNW, Great Lakes, NE) I could live with them. Just be aware this is a personal choice. Some will avoid them, but understand WHY they avoid them.

From the sale listing on Yachtworld:

"This gorgeous 1971 Van de Stadt designed 39 foot masthead sloop is truly a rare find. One of 2 hulls crafted at Royal Huisman Shipyards in the Netherlands, best known for their superyachts, this aluminum built, teak-decked racer-cruiser has had an illustrious racing career beginning in the late 70’s.

As “Pied Piper” she was involved with the illustrious Chicago Yacht Club and placed competitively in many events from the Windy City to Milwaukee. She retired from competition in the early 2000’s and has been used as a family cruiser since.

The quality of her construction is evident and her sailing abilities well-proven. She needs a little attention here and there but is in sail-away condition and eagerly awaiting the spring.

She has a good set of sails and was recently repowered with a 30 HP Volvo turbodiesel, as well as new batteries replaced this year. Her older winches were replaced with new Barients and her running and standing rigging are ready for action. A 2013 survey is available.

Her owners are moving inland and all offers are encouraged. "

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

I like several boats Al Mason designed.
(CF member RKB has a sweet looking Mason 38 woodie, SANTA MARIA.)

That blue hulled steel boat has a nice look (I find it appealing).

Look at that bow pulpit! I recall when I was a boy I thought ALL sailboats had one like that! And my reasoning was:
All the better for watching the dolphins play near the bow of a sailboat underway.
_________

Thanks for adding that one to this thread. I enjoyed seeing it.

I looked. Looks nice for an older coastal cruiser. Better looking than some boats I have seen at that Asking Price.

Yeah, pretty tough boats too like all the oldies! The flush or raised deck is not an ideal design for cruising but for this area, at that price, for that boat... could be a really good deal for someone looking for a stout and inexpensive coastal island cruiser.

Aloha 34. 1979

Ted Brewer design
Draft = 5.6'
Saildrive

Recent Listing: 1979 Aloha 34 Sail Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com

Asking Price = $25,369 (1979)

A 1983 model is listed for $34,000.
Location = Ontario, Canada

Steady's NOTES:
This is the first of this make and model of boat I have posted on CF. It looks like a typical coastal cruiser with a fin keel and skeg mounted rudder. Note that it has a saildrive. The interiors of two boats I viewed appeared to have traditional layout with a small chart table and quarter berth. The interior has a nice teak wood finish with what appears to be better than average attention to detail.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

Good job, Steady, again. I've probably mentioned this before but this is a great thread because I am sure there are hundreds of folks who look through these threads dreaming and thinking they will never be able to afford a cruising boat. This and other threads should help folks see that, if you love the ocean, you can cruise on a good, safe boat without breaking the bank.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

I have just been notified by a CF Member that they have just bought this boat, and they first learned about it from THIS thread!

Congratulations!

I am very happy this thread has served to bring a CF Member and a Boat together.

And as I posted earlier, "Good ones go quickly" so it is a good idea to subscribe to this thread so you won't miss other upcoming Outstanding Boats.

So, the Royal Huisman built Van de Stadt boat is OFF the market, but now part of the huge fleet of CF Members.

Uhh, don't look now Steady, but I think you are heading for that career as a yacht broker!
