SD 20 help

Engine has RPM but won’t move.. I thought the prop might be fouled and there was a lot of kelp around the keel, but nothing on the prop. Prop is intact and spins. Please any suggestions on troubleshooting this? Also, the boat is in Cabrillo Marina in Los Angeles if anyone has any recommendations on someone to work on it. ?

Re: SD 20 help

Well, if its not a broken or badly adjusted shift cable it could be that the rubber bushing inside the propeller has failed, this allows the engine to spin up in gear but normally there’s just a little bit of thrust. You can test for this by pulling the stop control, putting the shift lever in either ahead or astern then diving under the boat and trying to turn the prop manually.
There also is a possibility that the selector shear pin has…. Sheared!…. Or dropped out. Its a pin that secures the selector arm insde the saildrive to the shaft that the external shift arm is attached to. If it can be determined that this has happened, remove the shift mechanism assembly and replace the pin.
There is an early and a late version of the shift mechanism, the late one is the version that drops the shear pin.

Re: SD 20 help

The shifting mechanism is Teleflex Model MV-2 that has one hand, single lever operation of shift and throttle combined. I also noticed while I was using the boat today I was having to put the throttle very hard down in order to get any RPMs. Engine revs smooth and there’s no issue there. Someone has suggested to me to test the linkage cables by disconnecting the linkage from transmission. He thinks there’s a throttle cable and a shift cable connected to the sail drive. He told me to disconnect the shift cable, leave it in neutral then start engine and push the lever and see if it clicks in and moves. Truly appreciate any suggestions
