Well, if its not a broken or badly adjusted shift cable it could be that the rubber bushing inside the
propeller has failed, this allows the
engine to spin up in
gear but normally there’s just a little bit of thrust. You can test for this by pulling the stop control, putting the shift lever in either ahead or astern then
diving under the
boat and trying to turn the prop manually.
There also is a possibility that the selector shear pin has…. Sheared!…. Or dropped out. Its a pin that secures the selector arm insde the
saildrive to the shaft that the external shift arm is attached to. If it can be determined that this has happened, remove the shift mechanism assembly and replace the pin.
There is an early and a late version of the shift mechanism, the late one is the version that drops the shear pin.
