Re: Shoestring Sailors (Cruising on $500 per month - part II)

Thanks Newhall. I looked on the West Marine website and 100% of buyers would recommend that jacket to their friends. I recommend anyone buying that off the internet to go into WM to find your size before ordering.

Oh man, I like the surplus store idea. Not sure what specific milsup items are best. Maybe others.

Also the DryRider suits for bikes work well. Have done many rainy miles with them. Have one on the boat but never used it yet.

I have bought Frogg Toggs for crew that lost gear in airports. They reported it was comfy and dry.

Sportsman's Guide sells tons of used military surplus stuff from all over the world. I've ordered from them and been happy with transaction. sportsmansguide.com Really cheap ammo too!

Yeah, for some reason that link made Sportsmans Guide into a subdomain of Cruisers Forum, which dead-ended.

Try this:
https://www.sportsmansguide.com/

Not sure on that one Boatie, we're on a modest budget for example.
Might be though that the two threads have most of the things which need saying already in it though.

Shoestring Sailors (Cruising on $500 per month - part II)

Everything is relative, this was my neighbor, up anchored and left this morning, charter boat, apparently $200,000 a week.
Bet you could get it for only 3/4 Mil a month though.

However I see nothing at all wrong with discussing how you can get by on less money.
I imagine the people Chartering G3 looked over at me and turned their noses up. So if we turn our noses up at the low budget crowd, are we any different?

Re: Shoestring Sailors (Cruising on $500 per month - part II)

+1 to sportmans guide surplus. We had a last minute delivery work opportunity and purchased 100% gore-tex pants for $30 dollars each shipped. Ugly as sin though.. haha Some "Rit" dye helped. But offshore there are no fashion police- unless you bring them with you.

The desert camo "Cold Weather Parka's" are 100% Gore-Tex as well and the insulation is sold separately. They are awesome gear, super durable. $50
Rit dye helps here again.

True I guess.. I feel sympathy for the MP who says he has to count the pennies with his £79650/yr..
I have to do the same with my £6500/yr pension so get where he's coming from..

Re: Shoestring Sailors (Cruising on $500 per month - part II)

Haven’t quite made it to shoestring levels. I guess by that technical measure I’m a 2 1/2-string cruiser. Still learning though. Maybe someday .

Now, were are those beans? They can soak while I build my rain catcher .

Alas even I has moved out of $500/month land. Now I bask in the richness of social security. Why I atually own two pair of shoes. Still have flip flops too of course.

My skills at living at the $500 / month, serve me well even now.
