I promise I'll come back with all the details, but we need to get away from the cameras and lose our fifteen minutes of fame first.

I must say the whole rescue is a tribute to the air national guard and the US navy. An air based rescue at 900 miles is no mean feat. Being involved in SAR here, we would struggle to deploy that capability.

Rebel heart are intelligent, educated, high functioning people..they made their choices with full faculties. I find it rather pathetic that people would treat them as if they were a couple of grade school kids. They're grownups, people.

There's a big difference between the two scenarios.
First one: Government takes your "donation" at the point of a gun.
Second one: Given freely (or not).

i have lots of non-boat friends and relatives. At first I tried to reason with them, saying "Did you ever drive with your kids on Interstate 95? If so, you were endangering them far more than any sailor ever does." The insurance companies keep stats on accidents,injuries, etc. on roads and at sea so there is very good info on this. i remind them that I have taken my own son to Bermuda and back as well as longer passages, and they are some of the best experiences he has ever had.

But they really can't wrap their minds around the concept of being offshore. I think that things that are unknown are scary to most people. Sailboats are so unfamiliar an environment that they just can't relate. So I gave up and now I just keep my mouth shut.

Great idea. Its only a few days and they will drift off to the next story.
Experience has taught me that no one can battle a media perception anyway, so best to just kill them with silence.
