The rescuers (the 129th California Air National Guard and the USS Vandegrift) were amazing; I've never met a better group of professionals.

I totally want to give you guys all the details but I need the media storm to die down. I've been so amazed at the support that the sailing community has offered us. There was a sailboat that came by the USS Vandegrift on our way into San Diego Harbor that had Rebel Heart banners streaming off of it.

I know some people with disagree with whatever actions I took, but for those of you who support me I want you to know that you've warmed my heart. This entire thing has humbled me and I feel an immense sense of gratitude towards everyone involved.

I promise I'll come back with all the details, but we need to get away from the cameras and lose our fifteen minutes of fame first.

If the garbage gets overwhelming remember,

We got your back bro.

Re: Forum Member's Boat and Daughter in Trouble off of Mexico

I must say the whole rescue is a tribute to the air national guard and the US navy. An air based rescue at 900 miles is no mean feat. Being involved in SAR here, we would struggle to deploy that capability.

Take a bow.

There's a big difference between the two scenarios.
First one: Government takes your "donation" at the point of a gun.
Second one: Given freely (or not).

Re: Forum Member's Boat and Daughter in Trouble off of Mexico

i have lots of non-boat friends and relatives. At first I tried to reason with them, saying "Did you ever drive with your kids on Interstate 95? If so, you were endangering them far more than any sailor ever does." The insurance companies keep stats on accidents, injuries, etc. on roads and at sea so there is very good info on this. i remind them that I have taken my own son to Bermuda and back as well as longer passages, and they are some of the best experiences he has ever had.

But they really can't wrap their minds around the concept of being offshore. I think that things that are unknown are scary to most people. Sailboats are so unfamiliar an environment that they just can't relate. So I gave up and now I just keep my mouth shut.

Welcome home you guys!!!!!!!!!! Dont worry about the people who say blaming things. It is really all about their own fears.

Great idea. Its only a few days and they will drift off to the next story.
Experience has taught me that no one can battle a media perception anyway, so best to just kill them with silence.

(But then give us the juicy gossip!!!)

Sounds like you have the turdnibblers figured out... don't let them get you down, and know that you have knowledgeable and sympathetic friends in the cruising community to turn to if needed for any form of support.

Cheers, and welcome back.

Jim
