Anything is fair game here, although the goal ought to be to arrive at some consensus of a manageable list which may be implemented in a reasonable time frame.

I'd like to see some back and forth discussion here, and something more than "I want opencpn to ....."

I will be monitoring this thread casually. I will not be arbitrating. I will choose what to work on for the next release based upon some loose metric involving effort of implementation vs affected population. Not everything will get done, obviously.

Looking forward to input.....

New to OpenCPN there is a host of information developed over many years. It will require some effort on your part to read the manuals.

For usage look here under OPTIONS - The Connections

https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...pn_user_manual

For hardware look here

First, Sailormet, welcome to CF (or to posting, anyway).

You have to know which COM port the GPS is running on.
  • Plug in your mouse
  • In the search bar, type in Device Manager & bring up the app
  • Expand Ports (COM & LPT)
  • See which COM port is being used, write that down
  • Go into Settings & make sure the speed is correct (probably 4800 baud)
  • Click OK to get out of the settings dialog
  • Start OpenCPN
  • Open Options on the left (looks like a gear icon)
  • Go to the Connections tab
  • Click Add Connection
  • Connect to the correct COM port (make sure other settings are correct)

This is actually all explained in the excellent HELP section. You should read through that. You'll probably learn quite a bit, & it will help you get much more out of OpenCPN.

Remember, in Windows, the F1 key is your friend.

Re: Feature Requests

With a new installation it is possible that the initial boat location is not on any of the charts you've downloaded. Right-click on the location currently shown on your chart and select "Move boat here" from the pop-up menu.

Re: Feature Requests

I may be missing an option to set this, but i would recommend the heading line be a solid line without a marker at the end of it. I believe the IMO standard is for the COG predictor to be dashed with a marker at the end and the HL a solid line. When they are both dashed with a marker we might confuse them.

Re: Feature Requests

DaveidB...
There's no option to change the heading predictor appearance except its length.
This is of course a matter of opinions. These are mine:
The two lines are both dashed, that's true. The COG prediction line can though be changed in appearance as described here: https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...edictor_length

I've the COG predictor set to 30 minutes ahead and the heading predictor set to 5 NM constant length. Than is the heading line is always much longer and can be used to forecast the course far away. So for me it's no trouble detecting the difference between them. Also has the COG predictor a squared end mark and the heading a circle.

Re: Feature Requests

Thanks. Yes, making the HL very long helps distinguish them.

Re: Feature Requests

Hi All
I just downloaded the newest version of OpenCPN. I don't see or can't find the chart quilting feature. When I select;
options
display
general
all that shows is
controls - smooth panning/zooming and zoom to cursor
status bar option - live eta at cursor and default boat speed
Is there another area to look for this feature? or Is it gone?
Thanks for your help
sp

Click on the "Hamburger" on the bottom right of the chart window, you should see it then. It's left the main menu as you can have two chart windows now and each one could have a different quilting setting.

Hmmmm... Sadly that website I found in 2017 seems to be obsolete now. If somebody still knows where to find that kompass_en.html, please share it.

Re: Feature Requests

Hey guys, the number of ships with AIS is increasing significantly. I have not yet found a way to display different (color or icon) the "buddies" how listed under Settings / Ships / MMSI properties on the nautical chart.

it would be fine, to see buddies at the map in different color or icon.

i haven`t find such function.

Do you have a tips? (Win10 / 64bit / current OpenCPN)

I wanted to say look into the manual. But it took me 10 minutes to find something in the manual. It would really be useful to update the manual so someone is able to find what he looks for. Like now the manual is sadly unusable.

https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...ar_buttons:ais
At the very end of this page you find something about the different icons of AIS ships.
