Re: Replacement engine: Volvo or Yanmar? Common rail or mechanical?

As the OP is not in the USA, and will not likely be returning to the USA to have the work done, how would the EPA even know of the installation? I'm curious if there is a reporting requirement when...

Re: Drunks charter. Biggest pax issues

OP,

You've consistently mentioned your experience with renting out an apartment or rooms. I'd offer that this experience is not at all closely related to skippering a sailing vessel with paying...

Re: Boats trapped in ice

I've read of Inuit people talking about the advantages and disadvantages of snow machines and sled dogs. One older man made a clear point, that in an emergency, you can't eat your snow machine.

Re: Hatches at Night, Open or Closed

Sorry, but Wasp spray has been debunked numerous times as an effective human repellant. It may be a minor irritant, but likely won't deter someone with the mindset to fight you. Certainly way less...

Re: Chesapeake Bay haul out recommendations

Wormley Creek in Yorktown (York River) is very friendly for DIY, good rates, and very accessible to Newport News/Williamsburg airport. Also splits the difference mostly between Richmond and Norfolk...

Re: best galley you've seen on a midsize cruiser

In that size range, and that sailing itinerary, the Catalina 42 (2-cabin) would seem to work well, but it is an aft-cockpit boat. The galley is roomy and has good storage.

Re: Aluminum world cruiser with 4900 liters of fuel

I like their take on a bridge deck - do you call it a sump deck?

You are going to need that watertight door from cockpit to pilot house.

A few interesting options, but it looks pretty robust....

Re: What other sailboats have THIS layout?

Also, the 2-cabin version is pretty highly regarded as a live-aboard, with generous (different) galley layout and much better storage.

Re: Impeller help! Seized on shaft!

If you have it off the engine, on a bench, consider cutting it off the shaft (carefully) with some kind of abrasive cut-off wheel, like a dremel, or with a grinding wheel. You may have to first cut...

Re: Why do we have electric anchor winches when they clearly do not work. Anchor winc

So we need a manufacturer to develop a lightweight hydraulic system, engine driven with accumulator, that can run the following:

Anchor capstan
Bow thruster
Emergency pump
Backup engine starter...

Re: Seeking information on small pilothouse cruisers.

The Corbin is a bit larger, and vary greatly on their owner fitting out. Fisher has a few at different lengths. The Cape Dory pilothouses are really motor sailors and at the smaller end.

Re: Helicopter Rescue, what would be acceptable to take from board?

I have a small drysack backpack that will fit under a Type 1 life jacket. I don't think it is unreasonable to have that with me, if this is a very deliberate evac/rescue. Certainly the weight will...

Re: Could anyone please help me i.d. this boat?

That fourth or right-most port, seems to have the same reflection as the previous 3, and it is much longer, like the Bruckmann 50. I also think the coachroof proportions match the Bruckmann much...

Re: consistently clogged deck drains

if the deck drain connects to a hose and then an above water level drain in the hull, you could look at changing all components to a larger diameter size. This wouldn't be the cheapest way, but...

Re: Mini scuba tanks instead of escape hatches?

When I think of an inverted catamaran, and the requirement to evacuate a hull, I don't think of diving any substantial distance to escape the hull. Even assuming the hull is barely floating at the...

Re: Powering a windlass - Thoughts

I totally respect #1, especially over time.

At what point does a boat get so large that a hydraulic system becomes relevant? For perhaps multiple uses, such as anchor windlass, bow thruster,...

Re: List of boats with skeg and sugar scoop

Had a boat at my marina in Yorktown, VA that went aground via the skeg. The skeg was fairly substantial. The damage caused the boat (from the skeg racking) to be a write-off. A spade rudder would...

Re: Limber hole from bow compartment or no?

You can't just add a drain directly from the locker overboard? Seems that keeping it self-draining, without interacting with the rest of the boat, would be easy. Certainly easier than running a...

Re: Kids and dogs and cats, oh my!

Hi, neighbor!

Perhaps you should consider a center cockpit cruiser in the mid/upper-30s range. They feel 'safe' when sailing, even with kids and pets, and having a separate space for...

Re: Keel bolts - how good do they look

Slightly off topic, but is that a typical look for a Bavaria Yacht? Is there a backing plate under the flow coat? Because all I see are a bunch of fender washers holding the keel on.
