Hello again, scene 1 take 2 near Kingston

Hello,
Yesterday was 'someday', and now I have a five ton floating dogbed to get shipshape

She's a Grampian 26 named Skoro (it's Czech for Almost, there's a story) and I'm happy

Maybe not quite so happy with boatmover guy… he didn't chain the stands together, and one looks like the top part is leaning outward... he says it only looks like it's leaning out because the bottom part is leaning in… umm… doesn't quite reassure me

I've got chain and will tie the opposing stands as best I can (considering it should have been done before all the weight was already on the stands? Or am I wrong about that?) and run some bolts through the links to keep the chain from moving through… does that sound good?

I piled blocks beside the wonky stand, with pieces of wood wedged in… it feels pretty un-useful but will it help? At least till I can find another stand to stick in there?

Not sure whether I'm overworrying, or whether i should be worrying a lot more

Trying to attach photos of the wonky stand and of my blocking, hope it works

Besides this though… I'm happy… actually I hardly slept last night, because THERE'S A SAILBOAT HERE!!! and there's so much to figure out and do and ohmygoodness 😊

Trying to attach the photos about my question

Also a nice one of her just because! (She'll be ocean blue soon though) (and she'll be in the water next month)

Yes, I say do not climb up in the boat yet. Those stands need to be moved and placed correctly. Can you call the mover and tell him to do it right?

Your block support helped certainly. Really better to wait till it is supported before you start dancing around up there. Your boat is not too heavy, but better to play it safe. And I'd make sure the stands are NOT on soft soil there too.
Not 5 tons btw ... I hope... should be 2.8, and half of that is in the keel.

Those stands look like power boat stands. And they really aren't placed right. The wonky one that is cockeyed looks dangerously close to popping out.

You definitely don't want to be moving around a lot (or at all) on the boat. You need to get some angled stands that are supporting the boat so it doesn't fall over. Here's a pic of my boat in its stands. The boat is larger than yours, but this is how any sailboat using stands should be set up.

I would definitely chain up the existing stands. But I would get some lumber and build some angled stands. And make sure the existing stands aren't sinking or shifting in the soft ground.

Very exciting to get your own boat, but this setup is not good.

It's clay... You'd need a jackhammer to dig

Should I just paint her hull and leave the inside work (not much) for when she's in the water? I don't mind living in a work in progress, done that many ways before

But would have to get back on once to measure three places each requiring a piece of wood, measure for curtains, and take the cushions off to re-cover (once she's in the water, I'm on her, can't go back and forth)... Would it be a hideously bad idea to do that, very carefully?

Thank you for putting me right about the weight, and for being encouraging about my support job, that helps

I'm glad i came and asked here

Cripes about the stands... Boatmover sold them to me, guess he's laughing

Build... It'll be a couple weeks or so before I can get lumber... By then I could paint the hull and put her back in the water... Starting to seem like a good idea maybe

The ground is seriously solid though (see jackhammer comment above!)

You see how, in the pictures Mike posted, the stands are placed nearer to the turn of the hull? Yours need to be placed similarly, and you need two more. You do want it stable.

And, the clay soil will soften in the first summer thunder shower. Maybe you could put some big pieces of scrap plywood under the bases of the 4 new ones you borrow, rent, or buy?

What you risk is the boat tipping and you becoming injured (possibly seriously so) when it falls, could be particularly bad if you're inside at the time.

Your life, your choice to risk, of course, but it would be a shame to injure you or that lovely boat.

And, welcome to CF, where we'll give you the straight skinny, but it may be uncomfortable to hear.

That's why I asked here and your advice is much appreciated

I've already called around looking for used stands, and looked online near enough to me, just the other day

I'll get stands asap (anybody near Mallorytown Ontario got ot know of any i could rent or borrow please???)... Will take a week to get the money (maybe quicker), won't touch her in the meantime

Hi Ann.

I too am a Grampian 26 owner sailing out of Whitby. I'd be happy to PM with you to share any information I have.

I'm a 1974 G26 hull 329

There are a lot of marinas in that area - boats are now launched and they probably have stands in storage waiting for next winter. Definitely ask around.

The set up you want ideally is like this below.
You can leave the existing stands where they are and use timber props either side of the mast and one under the bow.. once those are firmly wedged you can carefully reposition the rear stands one at a time to suit preferably lined up with your cockpit bulkhead.
For extra security you could always add another prop either side at the aft end of the cockpit.

YES

Remember: boats are built for and are happiest in the water. Slap on that coat of bottom paint and get her launched soon!

Then just make sure you have proper stands for the Winter (that is, if you won't be going South...)

Congrats on your new boat! Grampians are pretty bulletproof and their interior space is just about right for a liveaboard. You're going to love her!!!

Hello
Thank you all for being here... Looking for stands... Meanwhile chained these stands together, but wondering if the chain ought to be less loose? Pulling on it to tighten seems a bit disturbing though...
