Should be at...

But getting back to the outset. He should never have headed out in those conditions in the first place, or that anchorage... etc etc

If stupidity were a measure of who should not own a boat then we'd lose more than half the boats on the water now. Maybe a good thing, but I'd wager the board activity would be less as well. I used to judge sailors skills until I made a few stupid mistakes myself. Wisdom is not always gained in week of ASA. Mostly it's gained from tears and years. Some people jump in and get hit harder than others. The difference many times is just luck.

Supposedly, the great thing about being human is that we can learn from the mistakes of others.

A free one-day safety class or a more extensive/expensive sailing class doesn't automatically make one into a proficient sailor, but it might save on some of the more expensive mistakes.

And sailing and boating could probably benefit from a more education -- which is cheaper, gentler, and more humane than culling the herd in Darwin Awards style.

Plus, Meeka the cat no doubt deserves a skipper who has a little more ability to provide for the welfare of his crew.

Well, he finally conned some schmuck into buying him a new boat. And then has the nerve to complain that it's not as nice as his old boat.

At least the lady and cat managed to escape this guy. I love the title of his book, it says it all, "Angels at Work".
