Let's merge this thread with the one featuring Reid Stowe.

This has got to be one story I can't judge properly ... So many different stories about this guy ... I just hope I never loose my boat this way ... Has to be a devastating feeling by any mans book!

Re: Captain of Hurricane-Beached Boat Demands Cash for New One
What say you of the many boats that were left in the yards, marinas and moorings unprepared.I watched through the storm boats drag their moorings whilst poly tarps were launched across the mooring field, boats dragged moorings and jibs unfurled risking my asset. At least these dim ones got the hell out of the way. Until the last moment I was sending the marina messages about unprepared boats. i added lines to many. Only to be threatened by a bunch of lazy owners that left their boats to chance. At least these guys got out of the way. All those others that sank or ran aground did not get this kinda attention. name call him etc... but check yourself are you so far away from a disaster. Did you prepare well for the storm. Why is this the favorite story of so many lost boats? There were many lost boats that have not been so discussed.

You make a very valid point .... In my limited sailing time I have seen a lot worse than this guy .... Stupid things so many who call themselves sailors do .... Think he made a call ... Thought he could beat it ... Didn't ....
A lot of judgement on this thread ... Wonder what half of these guys would've done in a similar situation ... But then again, probably most are guessing from their barstools ... And will never be anywhere close to this situation ...
For us who are out there sailing .... We know the realities, the odd bad decisions we have made ... Hope it never happens to us!

Not a boat story, but similar.
Mother of FIFTEEN KIDS from THREE fathers DEMANDS someone pays for all her kids, and her SUFFERING. (gag)
I Got 15 Kids & 3 Babydaddys-SOMEONE'S GOTTA PAY FOR ME & MY KIDS!!! - YouTube!
Sorry for the thread drift (or is it?)

But IMO that sort of (extreme) case is simply the price of being civilised.
Personally I would have her declared as an unfit mother (so any new child goes to the State for adoption or spare parts ) and the current ones taken off her - which they have now done (should have done that 6 kids ago). Foster care probably not the best place to be in , but 3 squares a day and a roof over their head.........In any event the kids are probably broken already - so too late to stop most repeating the cycle of the parents.....but one or two might have a chance .
In regard to the idjit in this thread - I would say that simply the price of being in a free society. And if they become the majority - time to move to another society

As a country, we need to be much harder on the irresponsible people. Irresponsible people tend to breed more irresponsible people and the cycle just continues. Instead of getting money from the government, you should get locked up if you can't care for your kids.

How do you figure? Stowe has built several vessels, wrecked none, sailed plenty.
