Need Help for Westerbeke 4-107 Starter Replacement

Having a really hard time finding this starter. Anybody have a part number or a seller? It is I believe clockwise, 13 tooth, 12v. Yes, I will try to have the old one rebuilt, but I need to keep a spare as well, since this engine can't be hand cranked.

Probably a Perkins 4107 with Westerbeke marine gear. Cheapest would be a Ferguson tractor dealer or ebay. Perkins were used in small tractors, pumps and other industrial applications. About $100 on ebay.

I second the ebay suggestion. I got a new starter for my Perkins 4-108 engine (similar to your 4-107) a few years ago. It's still working fine.

Re: Need Help for Westerbeke 4-107 Starter Replacement

No one designing a new engine is going to design new peripherals; there are plenty of starters and the like on the shelf. I have a Universal M25 genset. The starter and the throttle solenoid are appoximately $1200 each from the company. The solenoid is $125 from a diesel truck parts house, and the starter, a Kubuto, is $69 from Amazon.

I have a spare started from a 4-108-drive and solenoid attached. Sell it to you for $75.00. But it weighs alot and I am in S. Fl. postage might make that prohibitive. It is a Lucas starter. Bob

I believe Bedford used 40 and 4-107s in trucks. Then came the 4-108 which was very very similar and sold under the Perkins brand name, and used for industrial, truck, and marine applications. The problem is on even just the Westerbekes, there were several starters used. Various tooth numbers. Different flywheel engagement systems. And the 4-107 was in production for quite a long time, with numerous small changes. So now I have an approximately 47 year old diesel with very poor tech documentation available, apparently no exact and precise reference based on serial number, blah blah blah.

I took a chance on a fleabay starter that looks similar. I will find out next week if it fits or not. There were very minor visible differences and I would have been more comfortable with a replacement with zero differences but this one was close and it was only $114 shipped free, new, not a rebuild. I actually would have preferred a rebuild because it would have a greater chance of being an exact match.

So, fingers crossed for next week. Meanwhile now that the starter is out, which was an extraordinarily difficult undertaking, I can do some more relevant testing of the old one and of course the solenoid. I was never able to short across the solenoid and get a kick out of the starter. Possibly this was simply due to the incredibly inconvenient access or lack thereof to the starter. Feeling lazy today and overwhelmed with work in the shop, getting ready to go into low level production so I can retire from my "day job". Maybe tomorrow I will fiddle with it and maybe Monday take it somewhere for a rebuild quote. Hopefully the fleabay find will turn the old Westerbeast over and the rebuilt original will be a good high quality backup.

DB electrical - Call (800)753-2242, Here to help M-F 8-5pm EST. you can also find them on the web, just google DB electrical, they have all types of starters at reasonable prices. I reciently bought one for my 1972 perkins 4107 It was the old style that dosent require the bendix drive to engage it, it works great and was 400 dollars cheaper than one from perkins and came with free shipping.

Cool. I will have a look, if the one I have coming doesn't work.

Don’t know if you got the old one rebuilt yet, but A-1 Rebuilders off airline hwy in Metairie is really good, I’ve used him for several starter and alternator rebuilds. Fast too

Not necessarily true, today's starters are totally different, small and lightweight. In fact even for a very common Chevy 305 (boat) engine I couldn't find the large old school type of starter with the centrifugal drive.

Nice. If thats who I think it is he has been around a while. Had a 1964 Nova with a 350 from a wrecked vette in it. Went to him for a starter rebuild. Maybe I will see them sometime in the coming week.
