Re: Identifying a mystery boat

If you are able to, try getting up to her stern and see if you can find a serial number. If so that can be referenced back to the builder. Just a thought.

My US-built 1970 Willard 36 has no HIN. Not sure when they became required or typical, but that boat looks pretty old - you may not find an HIN. She's a good looking boat. I understand the appeal.

Good luck!

It does kind of look like a Samson Sea Smoke, apart from the size issue.

And you're right: the office staff I talked to would not have had a clue about the model offhand. (Here in Ontario, the short boating season means a lot of the people working at marinas are not really immersed in boat culture--it's just a seasonal gig.) But presumably a couple of keystrokes on the computer and she could have consulted the owner's info, including the boat model.

Sounds like a solid 'if all else fails' idea, though she's about 3.5 hours round trip away.

If anyone else knows how to look up a Canadian pleasure craft properly, I'm all ears.
If a boat is registered in Canada you can look it up by name.

If it is licensed (50E, etc) I don't believe you can look it up anywhere.

The hin # on the stern - just under the deck starboard side - if there is one - is a good method.

Alas, she had no name. (To even identify it to the marina office, I had to show them a pic on my phone.) I swear, if I do end up owning it, I'll rename her: "Lady of Mystery."

Only if it is registered can you search by name. 50E numbers mean licensed and you cannot search these boats.

Re: Identifying a mystery boat

The boat in question is a Bounty 2, designed by Philip Rhodes in about 1957.
Said to be the first over 40' yacht to be built from plastic ( Fiberglass)
I own "Tess" also a Bounty 2 rests in New Zealand. Built in California by Aero Marine Plastics. Upto a couple of years ago Bounty's were rated in the top 100 ocean going boats in their class.

Re: Identifying a mystery boat

Search for "Linda" a bounty 2 on youtube to see her sailing ability.
Was owned by Steve & Linda Margott from Phoenix who sailed her all over Pacific for about 4 years

An identifying plate was fitted under the slide hatch cover. An oval plate about 200mm X 100mm. Our "Tess" is No 47 ... Mfd 1961 (from memory)

If it's over 40 ft, it's only got 18" stanchions at best. I find that hard to believe.

Seems to have a very different stern, rudder and superstructure to this Bounty 2:

Re: Identifying a mystery boat

I'm wrong, that's the problem of going from memory.
Also from memory I think there is another model that is smaller.
Will post if I think of model name
