Help Identifying Boom Parts

Hi All,

I am in the process of refinishing/refitting the mast and boom on my 72' C&C. I am stripping off all the years of previous owners paint and cleaning up and replacing all the hardware. I've searched through out the internet and can't seem to find anything on this part of the boom. It is the bow end that attaches to the goose neck. It also incorporates the in boom out haul. Unfortunately I do not have the original crank for that mechanism. Ia m wondering if anyone can identify the manufacture of it, or let me know where I might find a replacement. Also interested in any thoughts on re working the out haul so it can be operated from the cockpit.

One more question, what is the purpose of the swivel bronze swivel mechanism?

Thanks in advance.

Roller reefing gooseneck. Rotates the boom and the sail wraps around it. Hard to keep leech in place, sail gets baggy when it should be flatter, hard to attach mainsheet and vang.
Way obsolete, even for a Luddite like me.
Replace with something better.

Re: Help Identifying Boom Parts

Thanks,

That's what I was thinking.

Any suggestions on what to replace it with? Am I able to keep the current boom and just replace the end?

Re: Help Identifying Boom Parts

You can actually keep the whole thing and add slab reefing. If you replace it, you likely won't find one as long, shortening the boom a bit, so mainsail might not fit, although back in the day, mains were bigger than now.
And I assume the boat is a 1972, not a 72 footer...

Yes a 72 year lol. 35 foot C&C

It is already rigged with slab reefing, so is there any reason to replace? Or just leave good enough alone and keep using the current set up?

I'd let it be.

I had the same set up on my Rhodes 44 ft. SLOOP, HAD A Rigger tell me it was a weak link, and to have it Brazed up where the unit rotated, didn't do it, and on a passage i did a all standing jibe, broke the unit, boom jumped up then down punched a hole thru the deck, came back out afain did temporary repairs had it brazed up later, Lso had slab reefing set up.

Try Sailorman (in Florida) or Minney's in California. Both deal in old used hardware.

If you are really on a budget, figure out what size Allen Wrench that fitting is equivalent to and purchase a socket end Allen Wrench and use your socket wrench to reef the sail.

Re: Help Identifying Boom Parts

Go Sanibel’s route & have it “fixed” to strengthen it. Roller-furling booms are a hassle and a half.
