Tut tut Jim. Some of us take comfort over performance you know. (But yeah, it’s a bit of a wedding cake.)

I can sympathise with the OP and also agree better variety and value can be found outside out of Australia if your plans allow.

We ended up buying a boat in Europe with a plan to bring her back downunder and are very happy.

Yes great yacht. Would sail really well. My only worry would be the teak decks.

Re: Buying a mono in Australia and not going mad. Possible?

I'm still looking. Have searched out a few candidates and have made offers in a couple of cases. Slowly getting a better feel for what to look for and maybe have a better idea of what I want.

This isn't all bad I think but isn't what it is described as (Designer/builder). At the lower end of the range I am looking at but thoughts??

And yes I have seen that Baltic and it reads well but the decks!! Teak has enough bad press on this forum that I think I am off them.

There is the other catch that Au is a big place and really at my end of the market loss of business by being away from work and the cost of travel could add up to a fair percentage of the cost of the boat. Meaning I have to really buy in South East Qld for ease and speed of inspection/purchase.

Re: Buying a mono in Australia and not going mad. Possible?

I'm back. Thanks for the input from everyone who commented.

Well after much chewing over the issue and looking at quite a few boats at different price points I was pretty sure that -

1) There were no bargains to be had.
2) There were no boats for sale at any price that didn't need money spending on them
3) There was no perfect boat.
4) Realised all boats break and therefore maybe buying older, cheaper and fixing stuff myself would be the best way to understand how it all works so when I need to fix something in a hurry by myself I had half an idea what was required.

Hence I bought a boat that needed work but nothing too structural or long term or expensive to put right, was rather well built and appealed to me. It was not a huge amount of money but I have spent a fair bit since getting it and no doubt will spend a fair bit more but I love it!

Its been a very interesting time, I have learnt lots and have a whole lot more to learn. Sailed it for the first time last weekend and score the experience 11/10. Fantastic!!

Thanks again everybody, Andrew.
