Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

Thanks again to MITIEMPO for adding the photos of the boats I mentioned up above.

Photos make this thread much more interesting (to me), and are to the purpose I had in mind for illustrating what good (condition) boats look like.

Cal 39 are well respected Bill Lapworth design. I think it could make a good cruiser for some people.

This is a great opportunity for someone. If it wasn't a shoal draft I would be all over it. Nice find!

The price on that Cal 39 MKII has been reduced to 20.000 dollars. A steal !

Here is a Yorktown 39 on eBay. It's a true auction, no reserve price...

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Sailboat/32...6Wrt:rk:1:pf:0

1975 Yorktown Project boat.
Used as day sailor.
Been around the world.
Perkins 108 runs great.
Much bottom work done.
Top needs work.
Chain and anchor lost, needs replace.
UHF radio works
New seat in head.
New mattress.
Boat is in the water in Oxnard.
Transferable slip.

Ouch. Quick google search on Yorktowns seems to suggest it might already be overpriced.

Your review has been proved by two years timeline, Steadman Uhlich!
She is still there

And thank you very much for such great review and maintaining this thread! Clearly identifies difference between "project boat" and "money pit"

Thanks for adding a boat to the mix for discussion.

I followed that link and read the description (See below) and looked at each photo.

I don't want to discourage you if that is the kind of boat you want, but I also have a different opinion about that particular boat.

Remember, I do like the Endeavour 37 ("A" plan especially) and have recommended it as a noteworthy model up above in this thread. So, my comments are about that particular boat in that linked sale listing, NOT a criticism of ALL of the Endeavours.

I am in a hurry now, so my poste comments will be brief, but are offered in a friendly tone of voice, as if speaking with close friends:
________________

From the Sale Listing:

Endeavour 37 Plan A 1981

"This boat is currently on the hard as we were planning on a complete re-fit.
all stainless rigging is in excellent shape.
the wood was stripped sanded and sealed and bungs were repaired.
the boat is cutter rigged and all sails are in amazing shape. the only damage is to the sail cover on the genoa is tattered but the sail is fine. the exterior is primed with a two part epoxy primer ready for what color paint you would like. the boat has had all blisters filled and sanded and only needs bottom paint. the top deck has no soft spots except in the cockpit, there is a small crack on the floor. the helm is a Richie and is in great shape shines like new. both the water tank and the fuel tank where removed and a fresh coat of bilgekote was applied the tanks where cleaned and painted with a industrial coating as to never tarnish or rot.

the tanks are not hooked up as the work was just done.

The boats engine is a perkins 4.108 and all seals where replaced as well as a rebuilt transmission. both of which are in the shop located 5 feet from the boat.

all wiring was replaced around 5 years ago, and has 4 new batteries,

the interior is where there is some work to be done. nothing is missing but the parquet flooring has pieces that popped out all of which are stored in the boat.

there is a windlass anchor at the bow as well as a brand new stainless steel pulpit. the bow of the boat was sanded down on the deck and new glass was layed and it is primed and ready for paint.

the boat is 80% done and the price reflects that.

the boat also come with a 10 foot AB inflatable without engine.
also the boat yard has been paid already to transport the boat to the water so that is free for who ever buys it."

My Quick Assessment:

This is a project boat. And, to my eyes, it has a lot of work needing to be done.

This is a boat that has the engine and transmission removed. $$ to replace and get running, IF it will run well or at all.

The boat has had a new pulpit put on, and the foredeck glassed. That is Red Flag to me and indicates a possible repair needed because of some kind of accident or crash. ???

The floor looks like it is in bad shape. The Endeavour floors are teak parquet. Most I see are much better condition. Did this boat suffer some water damage? ???
New wiring in last few years? Was there water damage? ???

The boat may be primed, but it will need to be painted. $$$

There is a soft spot and crack in the cockpit floor. That may not be uncommon, but commonly leads to extensive ROT in the cockpit deck sub structure (wood) because an open cockpit typically collects rain water. This can require ripping out the entire cockpit (and that shiny helm) and many hours of labor to fix. I have read a blog by a CF member (can't recall name now) who had a boat that had this problem, and it took him many hours of work, messy work, to fix. I am not saying that is the case here, but it is a possibility I would rather avoid. YMMV.

The cushions and entire interior look very dirty and bad to me. $$

I have seen much better condition Endeavour 37 boats with engines in place, no need to paint, nice interiors, and apparently "ready to sail" for a few thousand dollars more than this project boat. (See earlier listing I posted for one that looks great and is Asking Price just $19,900).

So, my view?
I would pass on this one. To me, it is not worth the $12,000 Asking Price when there are much nicer boats out there that are not much more expensive and "ready to go" sailing (time has a value to me) and have fewer "unknowns."

I hope that helps.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

1982 LANCER BOATS 36
I consider it as good deal, may be I am wrong.
For single-hand cruising I like this layout a lot!
Yeah - Noh??
Listed for $19K. Asking $17k..
I reasonable believe it can be taken for 15K and with all outsourced major repairs can be under 20K.
On Internet conflicting reviews of this model - the model boat owners always positive. Go figure.

Issues: She needs too have compression post replaced. Local shop estimate for hull out in mast out in and aluminum anodized post job 2,750K.
The sites doesn't give much info on details.
She is on the water right now.
Per broker e-mail:
The ports and hatches are all fairly new. There is no crazing or leaking issues. The owner began replacing the sole with teak and holly marine plywood. It is about half done and he does have enough material for the new owner to finish if they want to. The parts that are the old sole aren't in that bad of condition. The interior cushions have all been recently re-upholstered. The bottom gets cleaned and the zincs checked once a month. It is probably time for a bottom job. The main sail appears to be in good condition. The jib that is on the furler is worn. There is another jib in a bag that is in better condition.

The boat did have an accepted offer and they began a pre-purchase survey. One of the items that was found is that there is corrosion on the base of the compression post. The buyers didn't want to deal with that, so they cancelled the survey and withdrew the offer. I have received a quote for replacing the compression post and I have attached that to this email. With that in consideration, the actual asking price is $17,000. When they do replace the compression post, they will take the mast down. With the owner essentially paying for that, it gives the new owner the option of doing any work on the mast while it is down.
It is a Yanmar 3 cylinder 29hp. For a pre purchase survey, you can have an engine survey performed with oil samples taken.

The chart plotter is a Garmin GPSmap 441 - photo attached

Electronics - I am not sure if the depth / speed work. I don't think the anemometer on the masthead works. It spins real slow when it does move. Again with the mast down, it would be a good time to change this.

The compression post was the only thing found that was a show stopper for the previous buyers. The surveyor did note a abnormality in two spots of the deck starboard of the mast when doing a percussion test. The fuel fill hose needs replacing. The forward bulkhead, not indicated as structural, needs to have it's tabs re-glassed to the hull. The surveyor didn't mention any issues with the keel bolts which are near the compression post base. The propane system needs servicing to make operational, tank connections and solenoid. Steering cables need adjusting.

Congratulations! These old Cals are great boats. I sailed on a Cal 34 when I was a kid in Hawaii & it had sailed over on it's own bottom. In good shape this boat will safely take you wherever you want to go.

That Lancer 36 looks nice and at a good price too.

The layout reminds me of the Endeavour 37 layout (very similar).

Looks comfortable for liveaboard too.

Put a few hours in research and it seems the compression post design is only "weak" point of this model. If fixed with the cost of the purchase it would be really good racer/live aboard solution. Too bad, for me too early to buy a boat in CA or elsewhere except Mexico San Carlos. Still employed and working from CA would kill my budget.
